stain removal tips?

Please share yours.  I'm sick of stained clothes.  Oxyclean and Zout just don't seem to be cutting it..  Banana is the worst!

Re: stain removal tips?

  • I'm a huge fan of Shout Advanced (in the blue bottle) and the Tide Stain Release. Between those two things almost all of the stains come out of G's clothes.

  • cold water and dishwasher detergent (powder stuff) in a sink to soak...scrub the stain and repeat if necessary.  I've broken up those cascade things before and they work fine.  I had the messiest baby in the world the first 15 months so I know how heartbreaking it is to throw clothes out because you can't get something out.
  • I've always used the Dreft stain remover spray and it works great. Sometimes I have to wash/spray it twice but it almost always gets the stains out. And it works best if you spray it the same day (not let it sit in the hamper for a few days).

I also use it all the time on DH's stained clothes. :)

Banana is the worst!! I've had good success with Oxy though - I just use the powder stuff not the new squirt bottle stuff.

As a last ditch effort, let the clothes dry in the sun. It works amazingly well (though I don't know if it works on banana)

  • Go to Fiesta and get Mexican laundry soap. It will be by Boarax and washing power.

I have some called ZOTE! and it gets everything out. I have no idea what makes it work, but it is wonderful.

Second vote for Dreft stain remover.   I had bought some lots of baby clothes on ebay and some of it was stained and obviously set in for a while.   I took a bottle of Dreft stained remover and sprained down all the stains let the Dreft sit for a while then washed and 90-95% of all the stains came out.   Some I did have to do a second time and the stain came out but others were just hopeless.

I'm sure if you use it on fresh stains you will have no problems getting it out at all.

If you do this make sure your cascade isnt the one with bleach added. I know someone that made that mistake.

  • I have good luck with a Fels Naptha bar.  They can be somewhat hard to find, but I think Randall's often has them and some HEBs.  None of the stores around here seem to have it, so I order mine from The Vermont Country Store

Zote and Fels Naptha are pretty much the same thing.

    I found Zote at Target.

  • Kroger (at least the one on west gray) sells Fels Naptha. I have used it to make the laundry detergent I use to wash my dish towels.

  • The Tide Stain Release rocks.  I normally Shout the heck out of a stain and use some TSR in the wash.  Works like a charm.

  • +1 for Dreft. i keep a bottle in each closet above the boys' hampers and spray any stains before the clothes go in. they can sit a few days like that and stains still come out.

for grease, I use a little bit of dish detergent before i put it in the wash. these stains i wash ASAP tho

  • I have found that Borax takes out most stains.  I normally will just add to washer but for bad stains just soak item for 15 minutes or so with a concentrated amount and warm water in a container.
