traveling while pregnant

We are going on vacation to Colorado when I am 25 weeks. My dr has already ok'd the trip and everything.

I was wondering how did you feel at 25 weeks? I know every pregnancy is different but I would love to hear the different experiences. We are going to mainly be site seeing since my dr advised against excercise while I am there due to the alttitude, but I was wondering how comfortable I would be driving in a car or even going for a small walk/hike to see the views.

Re: traveling while pregnant

  • you should be fine. the hardest thing will probably be adapting to the hotel bed at that point. i would guess you'll definitely look pregnant and all that, but you won't be huge. i gained 65 lbs (unacceptable!) with #1 and i traveled at 28 weeks and was fine.

  • I think how you feel will depend on how high you go.  I spent the last half of my first pregnancy living in Mexico City, which is at altitude (7,400 feet.)  My body adjusted quickly and I had no trouble walking the city during the second trimester.

I did have trouble when we took a driving trip to the top of a mountain called Nevado de Toluca.  We drove to the top to hike around an extinct volcano's rim.  I got out of the car to walk around and I couldn't breathe very well.  Later on I realized we were at some ridiculous altitude like 15,000 feet!  Dumb, dumb, dumb - we pretty much had to turn around and drive back down again.

Just listen to your body and rest if you need to.  You may have more shortness of breath than usual at altitude.  I wouldn't go above the tree line.

  • We took our babymoon to Vancouver when I was 24-25ish weeks. I felt amazing...had so much energy, was sleeping well and just overall felt great. We did a lot of walking that trip (very urban area and we didn't have a car), so by the end of the day my feet were tired, but I was swelling or anything at that point. Have fun!

  • I felt great at 25 weeks as well! I was walking the Rodeo around that time in my pregnancy.  I wore supportive shoes and didn't have the swelling or anything.  (Didn't have to worry about the altitude part though.)  The bed would be my issue...I LOVE my sleep number bed.  Travelling has sucked because the bed is hard, and doesn't have enough pillows.  Have a great trip! :)
  • just be prepared to start small and build on that - don't go out for any major trips until you know how you feel.

I went to Alaska to see my mom at 20/21 weeks with Marion and had a great trip.  We just couldn't do any of the usual outdoor stuff because I got breathless pretty quick if we left sea level, or close to it.

And on the flight, just make sure you get up and walk around every thirty minutes or so.

I wasn't big at 25 week.  I didn't really start even showing until just before then.  I went to Mexico and walked all over with Lila...  I flew at least 5 times while pg with Luca..  Just drink a lot of water.  I did swell a little..  I drove with both kiddos up until the day they were born...
  • Altitude always throws me for a loop, so I would definitely take it slow and drink a ton of water. Besides the altitude, I would imagine you should be feeling fine at that point.

  • I went to LA & San Diego when I was about 25 weeks.  We walked a LOT but I felt fine.  The first few days we were gone I was on vacation, but the rest of the week I worked a convention & trade show.  I spent the good portion of my time there on my feet.  They were swollen, but I drank a lot of water.

It was at that point where I wore heels for the very last time until I had the baby.  I think you should go and just don't try to overdo it.

i've taken 7 trips so far this pregnancy and it hasn't affected me at all yet (except with rising crankiness levels :) can't wait til my travel cut-off date).  but i can typically sleep anywhere, so being in a new bed doesnt mean much for me.  if you're sensitive, maybe bring your own pillows?   i definitely also would say drink a ton of water.

  • I just flew home last weekend at 23 weeks and it was completely fine.  I just recommend getting up and walking around during the flight.  During my trip, I was able to do a lot of walking around without any problems.  Just take it slowly and stop to rest if you feel like you need it.  And ditto PPs on the water.
