gender scan u/s?

How many of you are just receiving a scan to find out the gender from your dr?

I have read multiple posts, oh it was just to find out the gender.  Did you pay for that u/s or did the dr think it was medically necessary for you to find out?

  • Most people find out the gender at the anatomy scan.  While not a medical necessity to know the gender, ambiguous genitalia found in utero can sometimes be caused by enzyme deficiencies which are very dangerous for brand new babies.

  • I would assume that an u/s preformed for the soul bases to find out the sex of the baby would be medical unnecessary and not covered by insurance.

The "Big U/S" as we all call it has a purpose which is not to find out the sex of the baby that is an added bonus if your baby shoes their goods. More importantly this u/s is like pp stated an Anatomy scan. This scan is used to take important measurement.

I found this which explains it in more details.

"The ultrasound anatomy scan, or level 2 ultrasound, is an amazingly interesting experience for parents-to-be. Your baby will be measured from crown to rump (and what a cute rump it is!), around her middle, around her head ? and that's just for starters. The four chambers of the heart will be viewed, as well as the kidneys, bladder, stomach, brain, spine, and sex organs (be sure to tell your sonographer if you don't want to know what he or she sees ? or doesn't see!).

Measurements are taken to make sure your baby is growing appropriately (and that his or her gestational age is still on target). A survey of the organs, including the umbilical cord, ensures that they are developing normally (or identifies any potential problems as soon as possible). The sonographer will also be looking at your amniotic fluid levels, the location of the placenta, and the fetal heart rate. Settle in to enjoy the show: The detailed level 2 scan can take 30 to 45 minutes (depending on how cooperative your little one wants to be during the photo shoot).  "

  • I know what the big U/S is and I always thought/figured finding out the gender was an added bonus!!  ( we chose not to find out for our first.)

I am talking about specifically a few posts below, u/s was specifically for a gender, and then there was an anatomy u/s later.

there have been other posts I remember reading as well, just to find out the gender..   I just find that odd.   (unless you are paying for it privately)

  • i had what they called anatomy ultrasound at 19 weeks. it was given by my doctor and there was no charge. they told me then. otherwise some 4d ultrasound places will do it for around 50 bucks but you have to be at least 18 weeks.
