f/u to 8 year olds dance comp. to "single ladies"

i am so worked up over this......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjehii-jjHE

2 of the girls parents were on GMA this morning defending their daughters,  saying that the performance was being taken out of context, that they were wearing dance outfits that wouldn't inhibit their bodies from doing highly difficult dance moves and that the one little girl had never even seen Beyonce's version of it.....

ummm, why would it matter if they had never seen the video?  you taught them every single move including the pelvic thrusts...

  • I grew up dancing, and I can confirm that you can dance in a one-piece unitard (a full body leotard) without being "constricted."

I wish I could have seen the parents on the show! I know I'm in the minority here - yes, the dance had parts that were inappropriate for sure, but I thought most of it was not that atypical for dance. Of course the thrusting was unnecessary and gross for little girls, but otherwise, the girls KILLED it. I didn't like the outfits for such little girls, but unfortunately, that's not the worst I've seen in dance competitions. Welp, I guess that's my FFFC!!

You have a point that those girls would great dancers, HOWEVER, that is the point that is lost in all of this. Now instead of positive reinforcement for their excellent dancing all anyone sees is how gross it was. Those outfits were discusting and those parents ought to be ashamed of themselves for purchasing them and then DEFENDING their decision to show off their 8 year old daughter's in such a sexual way. Even if you have seen worse, I would guess it wasn't on 8 year olds and that does not make it okay.

Exactly. I had dozens of dance outfits for recitals and stuff and guess what? None of them were half naked and they didn't constrict us. Puh-lease.

I agree with you.  The thrusting was a little much, but everything else doesn't surprise me.  It's not like they are wearing these clothes to school.  I'm pretty liberal though and come from a family that doesn't shelter kids from anything, including sex.  I guess that comes from living in the country though and breeding horses.  You figure out sex pretty quick that way  :-P

  • I watched it and, especially in their turns, I was like, damn those girls are talented.  But mostly that was overshadowed by how appalled I was by some of the thrusting.

I'm a p/t choreographer (mostly local ms/hs cheer squads and stuff) and I would never in a zillion years have considered putting a lot of those moves in a HS routine, let alone a routine for 8 year old kids!

  • I wish I could see this...YOutube is blocked from work :( SOunds aweful though.
  • my main issue with this whole thing is this......

correct me if i am wrong, but isn't it an adult that chooses the music and the outfits?  i see it as a form of soliciting their children in order to win a competition.  and now those girls think there is nothing wrong with dressing and dancing that way....they are getting positive attention for it. (at least until it hit the internet).

There's a pretty huge difference between helping your children understand the birds and the bees, and dressing an 8 year old like a hooker.

  • We are sickened by these moves because these kids are so young, but they are just a product of their society. Put on any pop video and this is what they see...of course they don't think anything is wrong with it, it's the norm now. It's the way of life evolving. Back in the early 1900's it was sexual if a woman's ankle was showing. Then the flappers were causing a stir with their short dresses and bobbed hair. Pin ups from the 50's. The women in the 60's and 70's wore halter tops that I'm sure their moms wanted to burn. Cheerleaders' skirts got shorter, and the tops got smaller (and that includes the little cheer girls too, not just HS). I don't like that little girls are being taught dances like this, but even if they aren't taught, they're still going to practice it at home b/c it's what they see in everyday life whether it's on the tv or (sometimes) in the home.

  • yes, the girls KILLED the routine. absofrigginlutely. and it's exactly what my husband said, too. however when i asked my husband if he would allow sabrina to dress that way - even for (only) a dance competition - he said no. i think that's the point IMO. yes they have talent, but the attire AND the dance are completely inappropriate for children that age. period.

I've been to many many cheer competitions with little girls that age.  Honestly thats what they wear.  They wear the same amount of clothing.  They also do dance moves like were they shake their butts and stuff. There are hundreds and hundreds of people there and I don't see any of them shaking their head in disagreement.  And that move that they do were they shake their whole body... I swear I've seen little kids on the Disney channel do it.   I'm not saying its right but these little girls are not the first kids to do this kind of stuff.  The song might not be appropriate for little girls but for an adult its not skanky lyrics. I honestly don't think its that horrible.

I can't view the YouTube video at work, but based upon what I can see from the ABC story, OMG. I wouldn't want to see a grown woman dressed the way these 8 year olds are dressed.

Meh. Its just clothes. Its not like they were stripping them off next to a pole.   I've seen more skin at a water park.  Visit Brazil where the little girls wear thong bikinis. In some places, 7-8 yo girls don't even wear tops when they swim.

  • Here I go: I used to be a choreographer for girls ages 4-16 and I see nothing at all wrong with this video. Besides the missed steps and parts that lack coordination. Any 8 year old would wear that outfit as a bathing suit in a public water facility, so I don't find it wrong. I find the lace a little cheesy, but that IMHO. As for the dance moves, they are not the first and will not be the last. Honestly, I think it has a lot to do with the ethnicity of the children. If this video leaked and it were children of Hispanic or AA backgrounds nothing would have been said. I know, because those are the children that I taught.

For those who think this is the first occurrence - you are wrong. I have done dance competitions world wide and this is the norm. From the dressing to the "pelvic thrusting", which is just another dance.

As parents you have the right to make the decisions to put your children in different activities. If you think this is wrong, that is fine. I have nothing against you or against these parents. Everyone parents differently.

How is swimming in another country the same as dancing in a competition and then posting said dance on Youtube the same thing? No they weren't stripping, but they were damn close to it. And now the entire world has seen it instead of just the perverts by the beach.

I guess we can all go back to the "everyone parents differently and you have the right to make decisions regarding your own child" line, but I still think the video was beyond inappropriate. Before I jumped onto my soap box, I asked my older sister, who has danced since she was 3 (she's 40 now), has a master's degree in dance and instructs/choreographs now. She also has 3 daughters, ages 13, 8, and 6. She's judged these dance competitions. Her response? Hell no. As a choreographer, she thought the movements were far too inappropriate as well as the costumes. As a mother, she said she'd have the dance studio's ass before she allowed her daughters to dress/dance like that. She also told me she's seen it before--and worse.
