3rd Trimester

When does your doctor come to the delivery?

I found out at our classes last week that the OBs don't come in until the midwife can see a head - as that usually gives them about 45 minutes until the actual birth (or earlier if there are any complications & they want him to come in sooner....)

just wondering if this is normal in the US too or if it's just here......

My friend who has the same OB as me says the Dr. was actually larglely un-involved during her delivery, the nurses did all the hard work! But it may depend on the dr., the hospital, etc....

I guess my take on it is, as long as *someone* is there who is qualified and knows what they are doing, I'm okay with that.

  • Normal. At a low-risk normal delivery the L&D nurses do pretty much all the work! Most Drs will come in as the head is starting to crown.  :)

  • Also it is a rare L&D nurse that hasn't fully delivered several babies in their career! ;)  Unless you get a fresh newbie (who should have an older nurse with them) you are in good hands should the Dr not make it in time!

This is how it was with Lilly.

  • Ah ok - good to know

the midwives here seem excellent - I'm totally confident in just having them during labour - I was just wondering if that was the standard or not because when I told my Mom she though the doctor sounded 'lazy' for coming so late in the game - glad to know it's normal for a standard birth :)

  • My Dr deliveries all his babies and was pretty involved with DD1 before I even started pushing. he came by a few times throughout the day to check on me.

He is in his 70s, been doing this over 45 years and delivered over 7K babies.

  • My OB barely made it, but I went from 5cm to 9.5cm in 30 minutes.  I had to wait for him to push.

Both times my dr's came at about 7cm and broke my water. WIth my first, he stayed from there on out I believe because I went to 10cm so quickly.

With my second, he left the room right after, I dilated to 10 within a couple minutes, my nurse had me "practice push" and out DD2 came with no dr. in the room. fun fun.

  • My first OB showed up literally 5 minutes before DD was born and my second doc was a GP and she showed up hours before and was the best.  This time I have an OB again so I get the feeling it will be 30 minutes before again.
  • My doctor came so late she MISSED the delivery. . The nurses get you through everything and then the doctor just catches and stitches (given that there are no complications). In my case, anyway.

I don't even remember the name of the resident who I met about 2 minutes before she caught my son.
