As of right now I am 9 weeks pregnant. I know I need to get to a doctor soon to make sure everything is good, but I currently do not have any health insurance. And no one is willing to take me on because I have a "pre-existing" condition. I've tried three different providers and they all said no.
I applied for MNCare and through the county, but they both told me it would be at least a month to 2 months before I heard anything back from them. I definitely don't want to wait that long.
Does anyone know of a place in the Twin City or surrounding area that will give me a checkup on a sliding scale? Or am I going to have to wait until I hear back from one of the providers?
Re: Health insurance problems. Any advice?
This. Planned Parenthood uses a sliding scale, however, I'd just go to the doc you want, as it will be covered by MN Care later on and then you'll have some consistency.
I have family members that work for the county and yes MNCare will go back and pay them .... BUT YOU HAVE TO SUBMIT THEM. Lot's of people think that they automatically go back and pay them. But also with MNCare there are only certain providers that they cover, so keep that in mind also. You may go see a doctor but then find out that they don't cover that clinic and have to switch. They usually contact you fairly quickly I know this from experience. You can also call your county to talk to a caseworker and see how far along they are with your paperwork. I hope this helps if you have any other questions feel free to ask I know plenty about MNCare.
Good luck.
I agree with this.
If they deny you, you don't want to be stuck with the bill for an expensive provider. If it's just a first appointment, I would try to find somewhere with a sliding fee scale. I would call HCMC, if you are in the metro area. They are the best for working things out if you don't have insurance. Here is the website for their OB/GYN Clinic.
On the very small chance that you are an American Indian, enrolled in a tribe, PM me and I can give you lots of information.

This is through Catholic Charities and they will offer you many, many services including midwives and help with financial difficulties. If you start through them and then like the clinic they assign you, you can continue through MnCare. St Joes Hospital is very nice and has water births, etc if you would like a more holistic approach. They also have one of the lowest Csection rates in the country.
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone! I was without internet this weekend so I couldn't respond.
But I'm glad I'm not the only one who is in this situation (or was), I'll definitely check out some of the websites and stuff you all gave. But that's why I wanted a sliding scale in the first place. In the chance that MNCare doesn't go through and I'm not stuck with thousands of dollars worth of bills right away.
Thanks again!

I was so happy to read that I am not the only one having these problems, I work for a company that does not offer health insurance at this time and although I am trying to work with them on that issue I felt pretty hopeless.. This was really helful and at the very least to know I'm not alone is a great feeling!
Keep me posted on what you figured out!
