Opportunity to move - help!

(xp from 6-12)

Dh has the opportunity to apply for a job in either Edina or Richfield. It would be a quick move and so we were looking up places to live.

OMFG!

I can't find a decent place that doesn't cost more than $1000 (anywhere, not just in those two places.)

Help!! We would preferrably like to live within 15 min of either the Edina or Richfield Best Buys.

And...go!

(TIA TC bumpies!)

Re: Opportunity to move - help!

  • So you are coming to MN :) I hope you find a place - I would repost this over on the MN Nest board there are a lot of great people who live over in the edina area and know the apts a lot better then I do.

  • That's going to be a tough call, because the Richfield and Edina are inner ring suburbs and they tend to be more expensive.  If you went outer ring you might have better luck.  And commuting to that area is going to be 20min + unless you bite the bullet and pay for the rent/mortgages in those areas.  Have you checked out Bloomington, South Minneapolis, Eden Prairie?  If none of those work then maybe move that out to Eagan, Hopkins, St. Paul, etc.
  • We lived at the Oaks Lincoln in Edina for 2 years and loved it!

I have a gf who lived here and it was nice-not as nice as the Lincoln-but a little cheaper. I don't think they have w/d in units. It's a good location.

  • I think you might be hard pressed to find a 2 bedroom for less than $1000. I lived in S. Minneapolis 5 years ago, and that is what I was paying for a 2 bedroom duplex. I would not (personally) want to live in Richfield. I would, however, recommend:

    • S. Minneapolis
    • Edina
    • West Bloomington (def. not East, stay clear of the Mall of America!)
    • Minnetonka
    • Eden Prairie

Good luck in your hunt. Welcome to Minnesota! :-)

  • I had a friend live here years ago... at the time they were really nice (most are slightly above $1000 for a 2 bed)

I agree with this when it comes to good areas to live.  However, I think that you're not going to have an easy time finding a good place to live for under $1000.  You can find one, but it might not be nice.  Especially if you choose to live closer to the city, don't pick based on price, because then you might end up in a crappy building/neighborhood.

I live in a two bed/two bath in Hopkins for just under $1200.  It's in a large complex.  It's only okay.  There are apartments just down the street for $800.  But honestly... I probably wouldn't live there if you paid me to.

You CAN find decent places to live for just over $1000, but it does take time and careful planning.   You can find houses to rent for good prices, but remember that those don't include heat, and heat gets expensive in the winter in Minnesota.  That's why we didn't mind paying more for an apartment that included heat, because we knew we would be paying a lot in utilities anyway.

I don't know if any of that helps, but good luck on your search!  Looking for housing sucks and it is not fun!

  • I live in St Louis Park & work in Edina...my commute is super short...so that might be another place to look...we own now, but i did rent in St Louis Park for a few years & they have newer apartments in the area for alittle over $1000....and if you look on craigslist there are some really nice townhomes & single families homes that are rented out a lot.

    Good Luck!

  • There are some apt. complexes nearby where I live. I don't know the name of them yet they're across the street from The V.C.A. (Veterinarian Animal Care) Clinic/Hospital on the corner of 63rd & I believe 12th St. in Richfield. There's a pretty decent size Maytag laundry mat across the street from the apt. complex. It is a couple blocks/mins. from The Veteran's Memorial Park. This isn't very far from Hwys. 62 & 77 nearby the Super Target shopping center & The Hub. Allina Medical Clinics less than 5 mins. away. Quite a few other businesses (dentists & chiropractors, etc.) also less than 5 mins. away. Also, there's plenty of public transportation (bus lines). There's quite a few schools & parks nearby. There's a community center, P.D., & F.D. nearby, too. Richfield is also about 10-20 mins. (&/or maybe less) from MSP airport, Bloomington & The Mall of America, Abbott Northwestern & Children's Hospital in MPLS. St. Paul is about 10-25 mins. the opposite direction of MPLS. from Richfield in The Health East Health Care Systems - St. Joseph's & Children's Hospital in St. Paul. These estimate time frames are from nearby the corner of 63rd & I believe 12th St. in Richfield. I hope this might help somewhat. Sorry I couldn't be more specific. I might have double stated a few things yet I wanted to make sure I didn't confuse u. If u still have questions feel free to PM me.

I've not known of many issues since living around this area since late 2005. On almost every block from around the park to shopping centers, I've noticed signs stating neighborhood crime watch areas. Many of our neighbors initially kept to themselves until we introduced ourselves yet we keep an eye out for each other & gather at least 1 - 2 times yearly & some we even exchange Christmas cards with those whom we keep close contact with. We've even had a garage sale with a pretty good turn-out where we allowed those close neighbors to sell some of their items, too.

    I hope u find a nice neighborhood & home!
