Lately we've been having a hard time convincing Liam to come inside in the evening for dinner and he's managed to push his bedtime later and later. He's convinced that if there's any daylight then it must be playtime - and this poem exactly captures how I always felt growing up, so I can't say that I blame him! So for everyone who's having the same battle with their LO -
Bed in Summer by R L Stevenson
In
winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.
I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people's feet
Still going past me in the street.
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?
Re: Bedtime fun!
That's a cute poem! I totally understand. Even as an adult, I hate waking up when it's still dark outside and I definitely don't like going to bed early.
Maybe it would help to use blackout curtains in his room and a noise machine???
I love that poem, too. We are suckers and sometimes just let them stay up a bit later when they're having fun outside. I know some other moms who have different bedtimes depending on the time of year. We've been going outside after dinner and then doing bathtime after that. DH will take the kids outside while I clean up after dinner and put all the dishes in the dishwasher, and then I'll go out and collect everyone and do bathtime. Not everyday, but sometimes. Whatever works!
