Icebreakers Sours

So I just picked these up on my lunchbreak at Target because I like to suck on mints at my desk, but actual mints just are not appetizing anymore.  After eating 3, it dawned on me that they were a sugar-free food with aspartame.  Not that I am incredibly worried about the 3 that I ate, but to be honest, these lil buggers are really good and I want to eat more.  How much is too much?  Should I just get rid of the darn yummy things? I don't drink diet drinks or use any artificial sweeteners at all so I'm a novice to this stuff.

Re: Icebreakers Sours

  • I only opened this post because I remember downing these by the container full when pregnant with DS. I didn't even think (or know for that matter) about the whole aspartame deal back then. Obviously it didn't cause any damage to my little monkey though, so I'm sure you're safe!

  • They are soooo da*n good!!!! I could probably eat the whole container had I not looked at the ingredients.  Glad to hear your lil monkey is all good!!!
  • my completed uneducated advice would be that in moderation, they're probably fine.  So, if you're going to have a handful a day--no biggie, but if you're going to down the entire container, you might want to toss them! :)  I stockpile chewing gum.  Normally I chew sugar free gum.  I am still chewing sugar free, because that's what I have at the house, however, I'm chewing fewer pieces a day.  And when this stock pile runs out, I'll try to find a suitable sugared replacement.

  • I agree with the moderation thing. While I did eat them by the container full, I will say that it wasn't like a daily thing. I might've got like one container every couple of weeks or so, but when I did buy them they were gone in a minute. Yummmmy!

  • I avoid aspertame like the plauge... but I am allergic to it!

I have one friend who's diet previous to conception of her DS was all diet- related sugar free items.  She did cut down on a lot of things, but nothing went cold turkey, and her DS is perfect!

I would look it up on google, as I am sure there are many people with this issue...

  • I am usually pretty good about eating entire containers of things like this, so hopefully I will be ok.  I doubt this is something I will buy again just because I am trying to avoid all of the no-go's but I will enjoy this container while it lasts.
  • I have still been eating/drinking things with aspartame in them.  Most resources I've read say that it is fine in moderation.  I've cut down how much aspartame I have - no more having 3 diet cokes in a day - but I'm not stressing too much about it.

  • My dr suggests no more than two servings of artificial sweeteners a day (two sodas, etc). I will warn you, however, that those sours used to have sorbitol (I don't know if they still do) which can cause diarrhea and gas. I loved those sours, too, until I got really painful gas from downing an entire package in one sitting, before I was pregnant. Like everything, moderation is key.

Now off to go stuff my face with more cheese bread...
