Frozen custard...?

Hi girls.  Anyone know if frozen custard is ok to eat?  I can't really find anything on Google.  I know we're definitely not supposed to eat soft serve.  I called Culvers to ask them about their frozen custard, and they didn't know the exact ingredients, but they said there is egg in the frozen custard.

Re: Frozen custard...?

  • no idea...but I do know it is yummy. I know there are Organic versions (if you have a WholeFoods near you?) so maybe that is a bit better.

  • I knew it. They are going to take everything away from pregnant women.

What is wrong with soft serve ice cream? Many ice creams and custards have eggs in them; they heat the mixture while combining the ingredients, then turn it into ice cream. There is nothing to fear from raw eggs in your ice cream, because they aren't raw. (Even Ben n Jerrys has eggs in it.)

If you really want to know what is in it, look up the nutritional info on their website.

    And eat the frozen custard.

  • Soft serve was not on my do not eat list. I have heard that the reason some docs say no is because of the bacteria that can collect in the dispenser and can actually cause illness at any time, not just during pregnancy.

  • The reason some people frown upon soft serve and fro-yo has nothing to do with the ingredients, it is from the low risk of listeria lingering in the machine itself.

If you're at a place that cleans its machines regularly you should have no problem with soft serve or frozen custard.

  • Thanks.  I wasn't sure if the egg in custard was raw--if it is, it's the same reason why we can't eat caesar dressing or raw cookie dough; there's a risk of salmonella.  I know it doesn't have to do with the risk of listeria like with soft serve.  It seems like nothing is safe for some reason or another!

  • The law in the US requires that all egg products distributed for consumption be pasteurized.  I guess I could see being a bit leery of soft serve or custard at a mom and pop shop that makes their base from scratch, but any chain would be required by law to only use pasteurized egg products (therefore killing any potential salmonella).

That being said, listeria would be a concern with any type of semi-frozen dessert in a machine like that, no matter what the ingredients.

I don't happen to personally worry about it, but I don't want you to think that the risk isn't there at all.

    Everyone should decide for themselves.
