Registry Question

I've been looking through random registries today of people I know who are having babies.  One thing that I find kind of off-putting, but not sure if it's just me, is people registering for things like stationary entertainers (exersaucers), walkers, jumperoos, etc.  I guess I feel like the registry should be used for more newborn/infant specific items, however, I can also see where some people think anything the child will use during the first year is fair game.

What do y'all think?

Re: Registry Question

  • i just did my registry last night and i did put a jumper on there. That is really the only thing i put that is for older than infant. But i just liked it and figured why not. lol i might not get it, but i did a registry for babies r us. and whatever is not purchased, they give me a 10% off to buy the rest of the stuff i did not receive when i want to buy it.

  • I registered for those things. I also registered for things like sippy cups and stuff for when LO is 6+ Months. I think it depends on what your used to seeing, alot of those things you mentioned people register for around here.

  • Meh, I put some of those items on mine. And all my friends put items like that on theirs.  What else would be on a registry then... onesies and bathing supplies? Boringggg lol

Granted... the ones my husband and I picked out are on the less-expensive side. Regarding the items you mentioned, we picked out a stationary bouncer/saucer thingie, doorway jumper my husband loved, travel swing and travel bouncer.

  • I put everything on my registery, I had two large showers and was told to. Plus in my family people like the big things b/c they can go in on them together, I found with my shower that those smaller things hat you do need is actually what wasn't bought.

Its a registry your asking for gifts no matter what the gift is and the baby will use those stationary things (in my case at 4 months) early on.

  • If you go the route of newborn or infant, then there isn't a point in registering for umbrella strollers, high chairs, and things like that as well.  The point is gifts for your little one.

Just because it's on the registry didn't mean that someone has to buy it.  I'm a believer that you register for everything so you can use the discount after :P

  • I also forgot to add...  we added items like the sippy cups too like PP mentioned. And I think it's tacky when people register for things only a toddler will use. We tried to keep our registry to things for a newborn-1yr mostly. Like, we didn't go picking out a Potty Seat or something lol
  • I feel like anything that is used in the 1st year is fair game.  Children go through so many stages in that first years and you go through so many different items, the shower is to help you prepare for that.

Most of the older things I registered for are actually multi-stage, like the exersaucer https://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=16318094 .

If you think they should only get infant stuff, then only buy them infant stuff. I don't really get why you should be annoyed that they want to be prepared.

  • I actually did NOT register for these things because I was of the same mind that it was infant specific and I would rather some one have gotten me a gift card towards a bigger item if nothing else suited their taste on the registry but we enede up recieving an exersaucer and a johnny jumpie and a bunch of other toys as well... so I guess not a ton of people are bothered IMO

  • I did not register for them b/c i thought it was for older babies and did not think to ask for it now as I have no place to store it until time for him to use it. However, I need to register for a swing.

  • The baby is only a infant/new born for a few months - I would register for more long term items.
  • I can definitely see the other side of it, especially since some of you mentioned the discount you get off registry items.  I hadn't thought of that.

    =)

  • haven't registered yet but i will definitely register for things that cover the 1st year, not just the first 6 months.   heck, the last shower i was at, I am the one who BOUGHT the bouncer for my friend.  I know the little guy still hasn't gotten in it yet (he's now four months) but it will be there when he needs it.

likewise, you don't use a high chair right away, but you still register for one, and yes, you get the completion discount when you do, so it's win win, even if nobody opts to get it for you.

I don't side eye people that put those things on their registries, but, we chose not to put one on ours.  A friend offered to let us borrow theirs, and most kids will only be in them for a few short months.  And, I'm not really sure whether or not our kid will like it, so I figure no sense in buying it unless we're sure she will be interested.  But, that's just us.  ;)
