Our garden has PEAS! (and a transplanting question)

I was totally thinking our plants were duds!  But I picked one pod and sampled the goods and they are ah-mazing!

Now I am thinking I want to transplant the strong plants to the trellises on the front of our house.  They get full sun and our friends also grow their peas that way.  How do I do that without damaging the plant though?  Is it a dumb idea?  They seem to be having a hard time growing on the ground and there are a ton of weeds for them to contend with, whereas there are none by the trellises.  WDYT?

  • I do not recommend transplanting peas. Sorry :( They have sensitive root systems (as do beans)

in my neck of the woods, the season is pretty short for them anyway, so I say just enjoy the heck out of what you get from them.

  • oh, and you can totally try trellising them where they are now if you want to get the vines off the ground and away from weeds. Just put a few sticks (bamboo is great) in the ground about 4-6" deep, at the end of the rows, string some twine horizontally between the sticks, and gently encourage the vines over the twine. They should twirl around it on their own in a day or two. When you put the sticks in, just be careful to avoid the roots of the existing plants.

Thanks for the easy idea!  I think we may try that.  I can't remember, are the perennial?  (That's where they grow every season right?) or will we need to replant next year?  If we need to replant then I'll plant them there next time.

  • annual (plant each year). I dunno your climate, but you may be able to do multiple plantings/harvestings in a year. Peas germinate best in slightly cool conditions, so maybe you can do a fall crop???
