Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone know about "hip dysplasia" in infants??

I just got a call telling me that my new nephew (a preemie twin born about a month ago) has hip dysplasia in both hips.  Supposedly I guess htis is not uncommon for twins.  My BIL and SIL are obviously very upset.  He has to wear a brace on his hips now.

I am assuming it is good that they have caught it this early but I really know nothing about it.  Can anyone fill me in a little more?  Has anyone's LO had this?

  • It can be a variety of different things depending on the type and severity. It typically means that their hips were not fully developed and the brace is worn to help the hips grow correctly. Usually it is corrected by a brace and only worn for a few months.

However, it is GREAT that they caught it early because if it was not caught until say, a year old, a lot of complications can occur.

I hope that their little one gets better and that the LO does not have any more problems!

My friend's son had hip dysplasia and was diagnosed soon after birth.  He just wore a brace for several months.  He's nearly 2 now and he's doing just fine.

  • They were concerned about this with Finn because he had a hip click as a newborn. Turned out to be nothing, but he had to have several xrays over the first year to make sure things were developing normally.

Basically what pp said.  The brace looks sort of scary. It keeps them kind of spread-eagled all the time, with knees bent. They have to wear it for a few months, I think. It doesn't hurt, though. The good news its, it's very treatable when it's caught early, so your nephew will probably be fine.

  • My DD had bilateral hip dysplasia and was diagnosed at birth.  It is very common in multiples and is more common in first born females and babies who are breech, though DD wasn't breech.  We had to have a bunch of ultrasounds and are still under the care of an orthopedist.  She wore a pavlik harness from 5 weeks to 19 weeks.  She had it 8 weeks full time (we could take it off for baths) and 6 weeks for 12 hours a day.  The harness is far worse for the parents than for the child!  It just takes some practice to get used to diapering and clothing around the harness.  We had to put DD in a lot of one piece jammies that snapped and keep the crotch unsnapped because of the position the harness put her legs in (it holds the legs in a frog like position).  At 6 months, they x-rayed her and she looked much better.  They x-rayed again at 12 months and 18 months.  If she's clear at her 24 month check, we don't have to go back.  DD is absolutely fine now, though - it is SO treatable if you catch it early before their bones are truly formed.  DD is walking (and running and climbing) and has hit all of her developmental milestones such as sitting, crawling, pulling up along the way.  If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.  I unfortunately learned more than I care to about hip dysplasia!!!
