Heart of Lancaster Hospital..my experience

I wanted to let everyone know that I had a great experience at the Heart of Lancaster giving birth.  I wasn't quite sure about the hospital b/c of it not delivering as much as Women and Babies, but the nurses were fantastic!  I couldn't have had nicer people watching over me and my babies.  I was sad to leave.  I able to have a vaginal delivery with twins.  Dr. Livingston with OBGYN of Lancaster was awesome as well.

I am doing well.  I had my twins at 36 weeks.  I am so in love with my boys.  I am trying to follow the book Baby Wise.  I have heard good things about getting them to sleep through the night early if you follow it.  I am keeping my fingers crossed.

  • I delivered there in January and also had a great birth experience (well, as far as the docs and nurses... it was too fast for my epidural to work but that is another story. lol).  The rooms are amazing.  Huge, bright, new, beautiful.  The bathrooms are even really nicely done.  I felt like I was staying at a spa not a hospital right down to the room service style food ordering.  Fantastic.

However, all that said if I were to have another baby I would not have the baby there.  The big problem I found was that they don't have a nursery.  They like for moms to room in with baby which is wonderful if you have support for it but not everyone does.  For me it was my third child and my husband couldn't spend the nights with us.  He had to take care of our 21 month old and 3 1/2 year old daughters.  I went into labor around 1am and from that moment until I left the hospital I got about 3 hours sleep and not in a row.  The only rest I got was because the nurses took pity on me (and I voiced my concern that I was so tired I may fall asleep holding the baby and was worried about his safety).   On two occaisions nurses took the baby for me so I could get an hour of sleep but I felt bad because they had to push him around with them on top of their nurse duties.

So, while I loved the hospital if they didn't add a nursery that I could have to fall back on I wouldn't consider delivering there again.  Just wanted to share my experience.  But, if it's your first and/or you have a spouse or partner that will be staying with you so you can take turns sleeping then I highly recommend them!

  • Congrats on your sweet boys - love the siggy pic, too!!

Thanks so much to both of you for sharing, too:) I've been wondering about it and didn't know if anyone had any experiences yet, so it's great to hear such positive feedback!  Does anyone know if they have a NICU?

I believe they do have a NICU (we didn't need to use it thankfully).  I think that part of the deal to get OB/GYN of Lancaster to move there from Women's and Babies was getting a NICU.

Even though I don't have kids yet my best friend works at Lancaster's Women and Babies hospital where she is one of the nurses. She is a very sweet person and is also prego with her second child and due the end of June. Either way, I have heard lots of great things about Lancaster's Women & Babies but I live in Camp Hill so I won't be traveling to Lancaster to give birht. Either way, I'm happy to hear you all had a good experience.
  • Yes, Heart of Lancaster has a level 2 NICU.  I hope that helps.
