Why are diaper bags so expensive?

Re: Why are diaper bags so expensive?

There are a lot decent priced diaper bags - in my opinion.  I guess it depends on what you consider expensive and what brands you are browsing.  I personally had no problem spending more money on a diaper bag since it essentially was replacing my purse a majority of the time.

You can always get the free enfamil one from your OB or the hospital!

  • It's because people are willing to pay for it.  I'm not willing to do so, but I know a lot of people are.

  • I'm a bag tramp, so I've bought several diaper bags...some very $$$, some very inexpensive.  There are cheap ones out there.  What are you looking to spend and what style do you want.  When O gets to bad (she's fighting nap right now) I can search for you if you want...
  • Put the word "baby" or "wedding" on something and they jack up prices!

Honestly, I think I am going to get a cute beach canvas tote from Pottery Barn Kids... $50.00 and have my little girl's name embroidered on it.

  • I think it's like weddings - being pregnant is just another opportunity for marketers to try and convince us that we HAVE TO HAVE all kinds of sh!te that's overpriced and actually unnecessary.

I am not a fan of diaper bags.

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • My purse is the size of a wallet and I got it for like $12.  So to spend $70 on a diaper bag is really hard to me.  I know I need it but I figured I could get something for like $30 somewhere.
  • I don't know what you consider expensive, but it does pretty much replace your purse.  I have a nice bag, think it was around $60, that has held up well (even with water being spilled in it multiple times).

As pp said, I did use the free similac bag I got at the hospital with #1 for awhile.

    DS - June 2006 DD1 - November 2007 DD2 - August 2010
  • You can get them cheaper if you want.  Check out consignment shops, sales and the hospital is going to give you one.

If it isn't a priority to you, don't spend the money on it.

  • I have been wondering this myself!! I am not a shopper at all - especially not for accessories (I'd rather clean the house than go shoe shopping). I now have to buy a new purse, but I am waiting the 5-6 months until I buy a diaper bag and I'll just use that. I refuse to pay for two new bags.

We are registered for diaper backpack (DH prefers the backpack style) which if I remember correctly is about $30-$40. I didn't think it was too bad since it had the insulated bottle holders.

  • The canvas Eddie Bauer one that I chose is retailed at around $35. I think it is very nice and reasonable. I personally would not pay top dollar for a diaper bag and kind of laugh at the people on here that say they need a Coach diaper bag.

To each their own I guess. I would rather invest extra money for my child education than get suckered into tons of overpriced baby items.

  • simple- supply and demand.

if people STOP spending 100+ on diaper bags they wouldn't charge that price.

My bag cost 10.00 and I have used it for two years just fine.

  • I don't know why they are and bc I'm a first time mom,I don't even know what I should be looking for. Thankfully L.O's godfather has Coach,Gucci and LV diaper bags that he used as Laptop carriers! He has offered to pass them on to me!

I really don't think they are expensive. You can go nicer if you want to or you can just get the basic necessity type. I found it particularly helpful with DD to just do 2 practical ones. Both were Eddie Bauer and reasonably priced, but one was full size and the other was travel. It's all we needed at the time and I received 2 more from baby showers as well as 2 free ones from the hospital.

This time, I just chose to go higher end because right now I'm using it as my work tote and once Mikylah gets here, it will be our diaper bag and purse.

  • They are only expensive if you want to pay alot of money. there are all types of price ranges out there for diaper bags. Heck there is an AWESOME Jeep Diaper bag that my friend just got for her baby shower ( it came from walmart and it was only 19.00. ) So keep looking!

I got this bag (the Harper bag, right?) and I love it.  I got it to be a daycare/beach/boat bag and intended to get something nicer for my own use, but I like it so much I'll probably use it exclusively, at least over the summer.

I want to know why they are so freaking ugly. I love new purses and refuse to buy an ugly diaper bag instead of a cute purse. I have a bigger, summery cloth purse that I'll be using for a diaper bag for a while. I refuse to carry a Disney character or polka dots in public.

Be careful with cloth bags... one bottle or juice cup leaks and everything is wet inside the bag and outside of the bag could be stained from it soaking through!!

  • My aunt has a boutique and gave me mine as a gift, but I imagine it would have been costly to buy. There's a new company called Thirty-One (its new to me, anyhow) and thats where I am buying a new bag for this time around- the first one didn't make through Rough and Rowdy (my DD and me, lol). https://www.thirtyonegifts.com/

  • Diaper bags are like handbags, they come in all price ranges. You can buy one for $25 or you can buy one for $250 (or more). I have designer handbags and I have no name hand bags. It really depends on that persons budget, style and liking. I am all for huge bags and the one I am looking at cost about $100, which isn't bad at all (my opinion)
  • I have been using this "tote" bag for work the past 2 years that I found at Marshalls for $12 (JJ Cole brand).  I totally love it and it's held up so well!  Over the weekend as I was registering, I realized that my work tote bag, is actually a diaper bag!  It was the exact same style, but a different color.  I had a good laugh and have decided to just continue using it.  I always thought it was strange that it was waterproof?

So the deals are out there if you just look!  Just make sure it?s built to last.

  • Meh. I sorta understand, but you don't always have to go high end. If I didn't have the bag I'm using as a diaper bag I would have bought an eddie baur canvas one that I saw at BRU. Really cute and room and about $35 dollars I think. It looked very sturdy and not at all flimsy like some of the vinyl ones I've seen.

Shop at places that Target for it or maybe even BRU with a 20% off coupon.

  • Coach, Kate Spade...does everyone realize that this bag will live under the stroller, under the restaurant table, thrown in your trunk, stuffed under the airline seat in front of you, dragged to the park/zoo/beach and kept in the backseat of your car where your toddler will throw cookie crumbs and dump his/her sippy cup on it?  Honestly I bought a messenger bag from the men's dept in Target and it has worked perfectly for 3 yrs.  My husband doesn't mind carrying it and it's completely washable and also tossable if it gets ruined because I paid $19 for it!

ps I use plastic ziploc baggies to keep clothes and food/drink items separate and safe from spills.

Good question.  I recently bought a nice one that looks kind of like a briefcase for $14, not on sale.  I think Carter's made it.

  • I've actually used the free one from Similac that I got from my OB. It's the perfect size for shopping, daycare etc. The only time I haul out my bigger Eddie Bauer one is when I am traveling or know that I am going to be gone for 12+ hours....
  • I have no idea why they're so expensive, but you CAN get expensive bags for cheap.  I bought a brand new Petunia Pickle Bottom at a garage sale for $8.  That's right... EIGHT.  Those retail well over $100.

Also try eBay.  I sold two expensive baby bags on there for much less than what I paid.  (An OiOi for $60 and another PPB for $65.)

Thanks for the advice on this. I'm going to use a LL Bean back pack and I'm like 95% sure it is water proff, however, it is nice to know if it is not I can do this. I kinda feel dumb for not thinking of this my-self.
