Northern California Babies

Hi Ladies, advice needed.

Hey ladies, it's been a very long time, but I need some advice on weaning Darragh.

I want to wean him for two reasons:1)  He has gotten his 4 front teeth in the last month and is biting me so hard that he is drawing blood and caused an infection.  I have tried all methods to deter him from biting, with no success.2)  I need to up my current medication, which I cannot safely do while BF my son.  The problem is Darragh does not want to wean.  He never took a bottle, but will drink water from a sippy cup. I have tried every formula possible in a bottle and a sippy, with no joy.  I even tried to give him cows mile a little prematurely (he is 11 months) and he spat it back at me!

Does anyone have any advice for me?  Tiernan weaned like a poster child for Got Milk, so I don't have any experience with this difficult a transition.

Hope you all are well.

  • I am a member of a breastfeeding community that's really awesome off-board; let me know if you want me to take this question there (I would never do that without permission).
  • Hi Lorraine!  Nice to see you here!

Have you tried breastmilk in a bottle or sippy?

  • Rachel,

I have given up on the pump, it hurts too much at the moment anyway, and unfortunately don't have a stash I can use in the transition.

Alibee, please feel free to post it in your forum. Thanks

  • Hi L!  We had the same issue with Spencer.  Carter weaned no problem and loved milk at first sip.  Spencer, not so much.  Honestly, I had to kind of forcibly wean him.  I'd drop one feeding at a time every week or so, and in place of that feeding, I'd offer a sippy cup (tried it all - WCM, BM, water, goats milk, etc.).  When he wouldn't drink any of it, I'd give him a snack and distract him in other ways.  And I kept dropping the feedings, one at a time.  You can drop at whatever pace you're comfortable with - one every few days, one a week, or one every couple of weeks.  Eventually, he gave in and started drinking cows milk.

Hang in there!  It's tough because he really didn't want to wean (and I had zero desire to nurse past one year).  What helped me was a deadline.  We scheduled a weekend away from both kids, so having that deadline forced me to get on it and wean.

  • I don't have any advice, but I had to chime in and say I love the name Darragh!  It was on our short list, but my husband's cousin had just had a baby (in Ireland) named Daire (he also has a cousin named Tiarnan).  So we went with Eoghan, and we get a lot of "wow, why would you torture your child like that?"  I guess it's lost on most Americans, but I love it!

Best of luck with your situation, sending good thoughts.  Just remember, this too shall pass!

  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate the help.Sheila, I'm going to Vegas in two weeks so the deal will be done then, he's down to one session a day now, he's eating solids well, and drinking water, it just bothers ne that hebisnt drinking formula or milk!
  • Hi L! Good to "see" you here!  Sorry not under better circumstances.

Alana also did not take to WCM or formula, but was drinking water out of her bro's straw sippy.  So I started putting water/ WCM combo in her own straw sippy...  started w/ 1/2 and 1/2, now up to almost all WCM with a little water.

My reasoning is a little different, so not sure if this method is the BEST method for you.  I have been really worried about my BM supply since she has been sttn and not nursing as much during the day.  Her pedi said it was okay to start her on WCM a little early, but not to use it as a replacement for BM....  but okay to use as a replacement for water- basically to start getting her used to it.  Anyway- I know formula is better than WCM for brain development before 1 year, so I wonder if you try a water/ formula combo 1st instead of plain water in his sippy, as least to get some in him???  (But, clearly I am no expert).  Could you email your pedi to get more advice?

It is SO tough!!! Hang in there!

  • I've heard many times that some kids just don't like the taste of milk.  When he wasn't drinking much milk, I fed Spencer yogurt 2x a day to up his calcium.  Also, I didn't offer water - just milk - so that forced him to finally drink it.  Kind of mean though and you might not be comfortable with that.  It worked for us because it was a slow wean and I knew he was still getting BM when he wasn't drinking the milk, but if you're already down to one session a day, not sure if that would work for you.
