Breastfeeding

still hungry after hour of nursing?

At certain points throughout the day, my daughter will eat and eat and eat, and act starving when done!  We have to supplement w/ 2oz. of formula and she is finally satisfied!  She generally nurses about 15 min./side except in these situations... anyone have any ideas what causes this?  thx in advance!

Sounds like cluster feeding. I would avoid supplementing, it's not going to help in the long run.

  • 15 minutes on each side is not enough time to get hind milk.  Let her nurse for the entire session on one side, then switch if she's still hungry and you're "empty".

  • I deal with the same thing...it is cluster feeding and is normal though exhausting and annoying. I find it very difficult because the constant nursing prevents me from putting my older daughter to bed (some people may be able to walk with their LO's nursing but I cannot...she will pull off and this has traumatized my nipples before).

THe PPs are right though...if you plan to exclusively BF then you cannot supplement at this time (unless you pump, too, and even then you could have trouble keeping your supply up). I know that I won't be able to do this cluster feeding when I go back to work (I am a surgeon and am on call a lot plus I can't go to bed at 1230 every night and be up at 530 to operate on people and do my job effectively and safely) so I will drop this constant nursing at that time permanently when I return to work by supplementing with EBM or formula. If you plan to EBF you cannot supplement at this time though. You should know that most babies stop this behavior at about 3 months of age.

    Good luck.

  • thank you, you don't know how helpful this has been to me! And it def sounds like the cluster feeding.  So I am gonna stop the supplementing and do all the necessary "soothing" techniques as listed.  I only supplemented because I was afraid she wasn't getting enough milk and was starving, but now that I know this is normal it eases my mind!
