WTF?! ILs are already concerned about DD being "overweight"

I was talking to MIL this morning and giving her the update from DD's 6 month appointment.  I told her that DD was in the 75th percentile for weight and she started going on and on about how she and FIL are really hoping that DD doesn't have a weight problem when she's older because their niece is really struggling with her weight right now and it's so heartbreaking to see, blah blah blah... WTF?!  She's only 6 months old!!!!  I normally love my MIL and she's usually so reasonable, so this really caught me off guard.

  • How frustrating. Did you tell her your doctor isn't concerned, and neither are you?

  • My little sister and brother were both 100 percentile for weight and height.  My sister is a model and 6 feet tall, and my little brother is a pitcher on his baseball team, in great shape and 6'2.  My sister is 17 and my brother 16.  So don't worry about it and I would not tell her anymore what she weighs etc. if she is going to bother you about it.

Yes, I kept stressing that the doctor said her weight gain was perfect.  I'm just annoyed... and worried.  If DD does happen to have a weight problem later in life, it's going to piss me off if the ILs ever say or do anything to give her a complex about it.

That's an excellent point. I hope that you can confront her to let her know that she should MHOB and keep her mouth shut!

I know how you feel. My dad is obsessed with weight. I worry that he is going to say something to DD. I have gently tried to tell him to keep his mouth shut, but I think I will have to start being more direct.

I have the opposite problem (but the same frustration) - my baby doesn't eat for crap and is in the 14th percentile for weight. I stress about it constantly, but my MIL says how nice it is that she isn't "fat" like other babies and how "fat babies become fat adults." ARGH! I worry about her praising Sadie for being slim and making her think that that's something to strive for. MIL means well but she's got some jacked up ideas about some things.

  • wow thats ridiculous! If there were cause for concern your ped. would say so.  she is flippin adorable in that picture.  fwiw jack 20 lbs 12 oz and saw the dr yesterday.  she squeezed his belly said "arent you a big boy!" and that was the end of it.  babies gain at their own pace, and slim out at their own pace.
