Babies: 0 - 3 Months

anyone use karo syrup? need advice!

i've been having the worst time w/ LO. He's been fussy for days, thought it was the formula or something to do w/ his belly button hernia. the pedi said its unlikely an the hernia is common in babies. then last night and this a.m hes been pooping solid after much straining,

i called the pedi and the nurse suggested karo syrup. i read this can cause botulism and is ineffective. anyone have any luck?

  • My LOs have never had any problems with constipation, but I know my sister used to use it all the time when her kids were little.  It really helped them.  You don't put very much in their bottles but it does work.

  • I haven't had any problems this time around, but did have to use Karo syrup with my older son.  He was an extremely constipated baby.  Just put like a teaspoon in the bottle of formula or breastmilk, and it will usually help with the constipation.  I used the light kind (it was clear).

As far as botulism, that is honey, and Karo syrup is not honey.

  • I personally would ask to speak with a doctor about it before doing it but that's me! good luck hope your LO feels better!

MayoClinic.com did state that Karo syrup can cause infant botulism. Also that previously dark Karo syrup may have helped draw fluid into the intestines, but that today's commercially prepared Karo syrup is unlikely to do so and so won't help. They have recommendations for remedies for older babies, but since your LO is a preemie those remedies might not be right, either. Maybe you can call your pedi office again and ask to talk to the pedi instead of a nurse?

thank you, I consider myself corrected!  I had never heard of the mayo clinic research on this, only what the doc told me 7 years ago.  I also agree that preemies may need special consideration when dealing with any ailments.

  • i have never used Karo for constipation. We have dabbed a tiny bit on the pacifier to soothe him. The nurses at the hospital say they use glycerin water to soothe the babys to sleep before they bring them back to your room so my nurse said if i put a TINY dab on the end of the paci it would work. And it did. but as far as constipation generally they say you can give them a small amount of diluted prune juice, not Karo.
