3rd Trimester

bloody show vs. mucus plug?

I'm due tomorrow and this morning had some spotting and mucus when I wiped. I can't figure out whether this is bloody show or mucus plug. I have not felt any contractions. I have a Dr. appt. this afternoon, but wondered if anyone knows the difference? I know the MP can regenerate, but if there's blood, does that mean it's bloody show and labor is coming within hours or days?

Re: bloody show vs. mucus plug?

  • Your mucus plug is the barrier your body builds over the 9 months to keep any bacteria away from baby, even if you lose it, it can regenerate. You can have some blood when you lose your mp, but it will be very different than a bloody show. Your bloody show is when your cervix is dilating at a rapid rate and the capillaries in your cervix break because they can't keep up. Basically loss of MP doesn't mean anything, bloody show means that you need to call the doctor.

It is my understanding that loosing your mucus plug IS your bloody show.  They're the same thing.

Or if you read this website it says they're different.  So who knows?

    This.

Bloody show isn't just a bit of blood, it's put on a pantyliner amount of blood.

They are not the same, they are totally different, caused by different things and they mean different things as far as progression.  Please ask your OB about this as it is very important that you know how your body works and what you are looking for.
