I currently have antepartum depression and today my dr. told me she is worried I am going to get PPD after I deliver. I am am hoping after delivery it gets better because my hormone levels will change and I am already on zoloft.
I have my good days and bad. When I have the bad days it is pretty bad. It feels like I am back at the beginning. And the good days I feel pretty close to normal again. I take 200 mg of zoloft a day, see my therapist every week to 2 weeks, see my psychiatrist every 3 weeks and my ob every 2 weeks. I am not sure what else there is to do.
If you have or had PPD did you have antepartum depression too? I cant handle having PPD. I know I will end up in the hospital if that happens. I feel like I am missing so much enjoyment during this pregnancy that I don't want to miss anything after he is born.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
Re: My dr. is worried I'm going to get PPD
I think you're doing everything you can. Try to stay positive, you might be just fine after you deliver. I had very mild depression symptoms during pregnancy (had suffered with it for years on and off prior to) and didn't take any medication. I'd say I was pretty much fine throughout the pregnancy. I went down hill very fast after delivering and had to be hospitalized (I didn't want to take any meds because of breastfeeding).
I learned my lesson and if we have another I would start taking medication immediately after delivering. We also have discussed having a post partum doula (it's usually pretty pricey, but something you may want to consider). I had help after my first from family, but having them around with all my issues made me feel very judged and made a bad situation worse. Make sure you have lots of help so you can address your own needs (very hard with a newborn) and seriously consider who that help is going to be.
Otherwise I think you're on the right path as you're already on medication. It's hard to just wait and see. Being hospitalized was very awful, but it did get me the help I needed. Don't let the guilt get the best of you...I had a really hard time with this having a newborn. You have to be healthy so you can be there for your baby, so don't feel bad about doing whatever you need to do! Good luck, feel free to pm me if you want to chat!
