s/o BPA in bottles

I just wanted to remind everyone that BPA is bad for everyone, not just babies and kids.  I know so many of us are so concerned with doing the right thing for our children's health, but we don't do the same things for ourselves.

The reason BPA is dangerous is because it can cause hormone imbalances in our bodies, because it the body reacts to it like it is an estrogen.  It can play a part in things like breast cancer, PCOS, fibroids, infertility, obesity, thyroid dysfunction, early menopause, etc.

To my knowledge, the plastics that you need to avoid are types 3 and 7.  Try not to store food or beverages in these plastics, and definitely don't use them to heat food in the microwave.

Re: s/o BPA in bottles

  • Yes! Thank you! I am totally guilty of putting stuff in my body I would never dream of letting my kids eat (Lean Cuisine, anyone?).

Another suuuuper high source of BPA is canned foods- esp tomatoes. THey use the BPA to line the cans so they don't corrode (esp important for tomatoes b/c they are so acidic). I have found it impossible to cut out canned tomatoes altogether but I have switched to tomato paste in a tube- which is actually better b/c i only use as much as i need and then twist the cap back on. there are also a couple brands of tomatoes in tetrapacks, but they are pricey so it depends on the recipe.

i make a practice to not feed the boys canned foods, though. i know enough of what you get out (and we eat out a lot) comes from cans so i limit as much as i can at home.

I have definitely made it a habit to heat stuff up in either glass/ceramic/paper bowls/plates.  But the frozen food does freak me out with heating it up in the plastic container.  I have tried to pop it out froozen onto a plate, but it doesn't work too well.  Not sure what the solution is....

  • You wouldn't believe the list of things that can cause hormone imbalance.

    Plastics, as stated

Chemicals and hormones used in non-organic produce and meats

Diets high in fat, sugar and/or caffeine

    Stress

    Vitamin deficiency

    Lack of exercise

Eating allergenic foods or food groups

And the list of ailments that are caused by the imbalance is frightening.  (How obvious is it that I've recently been diagnosed with hormone imbalance??) I had a bunch of seemingly unrelated issues over the past 10 years or so, and my doctor linked ALL of them to hormone imbalance.  Just Google hormone imbalance symptoms, or estrogen dominance symptoms.  It's crazy.  I wish I would have known about it when I was 30.

  • It is crazy what all those things can do.  It seems impossible to really cut out all the things that can cause issues though.  I guess buying organic meat and veggies, not eating anything canned, and not eating anything heated up in plastic would do it, but jeez...  Talk about expensive and inconvenient!  :(  Now I'm wondering if those frozen veggies you can heat up in the bags are a bad idea too.

  • Of course it's pretty much impossible to avoid all of those things, especially in today's society.  The idea isn't to be perfect though.  The idea is to avoid what you can to lessen the impact on your hormones.  The biggest culprits are plastics and non-organic produce and meats, and that is what I've focused on so far, as well as taking certain vitamin supplements.  I've also started cleaning up my diet, though it will be a long process, as I'm changing only one thing at a time.  I started with cutting out most sugar 2 weeks ago, including artificial sweeteners, and just with that alone, I feel better than I have in years (and I've lost 5 lbs!).  My energy level has improved, my ability to focus, my mood... Next is wheat to see what cutting out gluten does for me.  Now that will be hard.

I'm sorry I keep going on--I'm just really glad to finally find some answers to my health issues!

a friend of mine is doing her PhD dissertation on environmental mumbo jumbo. air quality is her wheelhouse but she is the one that told me about the cans. she did a lot of research on it (and frankly, is almost too psycho about it due to the extent of her knowledge) so maybe you want to be more cautious about that too?

as far as the microwave bags, i don't know if those have BPA? not all plastic does. It's used in bottles primarily to make them clear, which is why a lot of the new BPA free are kind of cloudy.

but i think nanner really hit the nail on the head with the fact that there is really no way to be perfect at it without being all consumed by it. but every little bit helps, so do what you can and it will make a difference.

Rayskit - where do you buy the tomato paste in a tube?

whole foods. it's their store brand. i don't think it's even organic but i like it b/c it's not in a can and, like i said, you can use only the amount you need.

I found some at Randall's, the one time I bought it.  It was with the other tomato paste, but up on the top shelf.

Well now I'm glad I'm lazy and buy jarred tomato sauce and just dress it up as needed.  I like to make my own but there's no way in he!! i'm blanching tomatoes very often.

My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!
