Hi everyone. I am a full time working, breastfeeding, soon to be sleep training mom of an eight month old. I've been meaning to ask this question for a while and, after reading the post below regarding the most ounces your LO has consumed in one sitting, I was finally motivated to post.
The most my LO has consumed at once is maybe 4 or 5 ounces of pumped BM. I pump once in the morning and get maybe 4-6 ounces, which he never finishes by the time I get home between 12 and 1. I usually nurse him to sleep while I am home in the afternoon, pump 2-4 more ounces, then come back to work. When I get home around 5:30/6:00, he usually still hasn't finished the morning bottle. He starts the night off in his crib, but usually ends up in bed with me and nurses during the night. He has 2 or 3 containers of stage 2 food during the day and a little water. He is by no means under weight (above 95th percentile in height and at 90th percentile for weight) and the doctor does not seemed concerned, but I am wondering whether anyone else has had the same experience and whether your LO ever increased their intake.
TIA.
Re: Intro/Question for BF Moms
It sounds like your LO has just never adjusted to scheduling and you have both been content for him to take smaller, more frequent meals (nothing wrong with that at all!)
I would be willing to bet that as you start sleep training, he will increase his intake in order to "stock up" for overnight. I think most 6-8 monthers average about 7oz bottles, but mine is content somewhere b/t 5-6 most of the time.
I guess the main question is how many times per day is your LO eating? Some babies take smaller, more frequent meals. It also sounds like your LO is snacking through the night and getting a lot ofmilk then since you are away for part of the day. You might notice if you get your LO to sttn, that they take more before bed & first thing in the morning.
I ebf - but from what I can guestimate based on how full I am & how much I can pump or the rare occassion LO takes a bottle - LO takes more first thing in the morning & at night (probably around 7-8 oz) and then 5-6 oz during the day feedings. She nurses 6X per day & sttn. no solids yet.
Thank you for your post! During the day, he maybe takes a half ounce to two ounces twice per day from the bottle (so, 1 to 4 ounces total). He nurses in the morning and afternoon before his naps, then again before he has his vegetable in the evening, then he nurses to sleep for the night. He probably nurses twice during the night. After 2:30 a.m., he is restless and nurses here and there until he wakes up around 7.
From the amounts I am pumping, I think he's probably getting 3-5 ounces when he nurses (he also only nurses for five to ten minutes at a time). So if he nurses three to four times during the day, it's only 20 ounces during the day at the high end, although I think it's probably closer to 15 or 16. He's 22ish pounds so I am assuming he's getting enough. I just worry because I know he's supposed to get most of his nutrition from breastmilk still (i.e., not solids), and I am hoping we have it all balanced correctly.
I pump at work and the most DD has ever taken in a bottle is ~4oz.
As we have shifted to solids she has dropped a bottle and I dropped a pumping session. The most I pump now is ~2-3oz at a time.
We cosleep and she does nurse at night.
I see them feeding her classmates a 6 to 7oz bottles and DD has never had that much in a bottle. ever
It used to weigh on me, but DD is gaining and thriving so I don't worry.
If your LO is gaining and thriving, then LO is getting enough.
