As many of you know I'm going to be moving into a new house next year. Because I know the current owners and have been in the house so many times I know the floor plan and I am thinking about re-doing the kitchen- dreaming up things for it left and right.
My current "obsession" is not having cabinet doors on the floor cabinets. Instead I'd do a fabric covering. Sort of like this
The house really lends itself to this type of accent. Do you guys like this idea or is it too outdated/shabby? I don't want to remodel and then have people think I didn't have the money to do it kwim?
Re: Tmrtnk and others- opinions on decorating
Ah! I never even considered the fabric getting dirty thing. I'll seriously have to think about that.
FWIW I am not thinking that picture exactly- more just a visual in case my description wasn't good.
I was thinking this too...and I love the idea, quick and easy to change if you get bored with the color/pattern too...
Hi English! Ok, for the fabric, definitely depends on what feel you're going for in the whole house if it would be dated or not. What style house is it? If it's like a cottage, or craftsman style house or something like that, then I say go for it. It would completely be keeping in with the period, and I think if you select all of your other kitchen accessories, appliances, and finishes accordingly, then you'll be golden. Take the shabby chic look and run with it. (BTW-I have GREAT resources for that kind of look-if I can figure out how to operate my new scanner I'll PM you some pics you might like). HOWEVER, if it's a colonial, or a more contemporary style (which I'm doubting since it was your BFF's house growing up), then I'd steer clear-might do just what you though-make it look like you didn't have the money to do a proper job. Does that make sense?
Would you want the majority of the bottom cabinets to have the tension rod/fabric look, or do you just want to incorporate fabric on the bottom in general? A few other options (again, I'll hunt for pics and send along hopefully by later on today)-depending on the cabinet style, and if you're willing to cut into them, if they have a recessed center panel or something like that, you could always cut out the interior portion, mount your fabric on some sort of particle board or something covered with batting or what not, and then insert it to get your fabric look, but a more tailored version of it. Another thought that immediately comes to mind if you just want open bottom cabinets, but don't want them all to be covered in fabric, but also don't necessarily want to see the contents, is to take the cabinet fronts off, and then place baskets on the shelves to hold whatever. Again, more of a classic country look, also could be shabby chic depending on your basket finish choice, but allows for open and airy. Are those the styles you're looking for? Just trying to pull the right books to scan pics from....
Not sure if this would be an issue or not, but you wouldn't be able to put childproof locks on it. I'm guessing you wouldn't be storing your cleaners and chemicals in the curtain area, but it was just a thought that crossed my mind.
Personally I think that it would only look really good if you have a high-end kitchen. If the whole kitchen is very high end (granite, stainless appliances, stone/wood floors etc), then I think a curtain would look intentional and would give a soft texture to the room... but if you just have a basic 'ol kitchen, it might look like you were trying to save money. IMO I would prefer cabinet doors, but some people have a real knack for making unique things like that work. If you do it, I'd love to see pics!!
