NBR: New Orleans or Savannah

Does anyone have any experience with these two cities weather in June?  Like how hot and muggy is it?  We will have Aubrey with us and I don't want her to be miserable.  These are two places we are considering going for my birthday.

I've never been to Savannah, but we went to New Orleans last August and loved it!  It was hot and humid, but didn't seem any worse to us than our local weather.

Check out Hotel Monteleone if you decide on New Orleans.  It was a beautiful, historic hotel right in the French Quarter.  We were able to snag a great deal and get it for $90 a night!

  • They're both equally hot and muggy.  I wouldn't go to Savannah at all after June and before October.  The mosquitoes are awful as well.

You could really do either one in June, but I think it's going to be hot/muggy either way.

One thing to keep in mind with New Orleans is this oil spill.  They are forecasting that we will have poor air quality on the Gulf Coast for awhile because of the oil spill (a smell similar to that of being in a traffic jam) and that it will be uncomfortable for older people, infants/children, and those with respiratory issues.  This isn't accounting for any burns they decide to do -- if they do burn off more of the surface oil, that will increase the air quality issue.

I agree. We went to Savannah at the very end of October. It was still hot, but very pleasant at night. For me, I can't imagine taking Abby on the drive to Savannah. We left from Destin so it wasn't that bad getting there, but coming home it was at least an 8 hour drive-and that was with dh driving way to fast. Its a lot of walking...I'm sure New Orleans will be the same though.

We had to go to Indiana two weeks ago for my Aunts funeral and it was an almost 9 hour drive and Aubrey did really well.  However, I am not sure I am wanting to test my luck or not again lol.  We are also considering Atlanta to go to the aquarium and Stone Mountain and possibly a Braves game.  Atlanta is about 4 to 4 and a half hours from us.

  • Atlanta weather in June is GORGEOUS.  Not too hot (not that Atlanta is ever really hot -- I think they had about one week a year that broke 90 degrees in the 7 years I lived there) and lots to do.

I think Chattanooga is also awesome and I actually like their aquarium better than Atlanta's.

I love Chattanooga as well and it is even closer to us (like 2 hours tops to get there) but we just went this past summer for a baby moon getaway, so I think we'll make it a weekend trip another time.

  • Although both are equally hot and muggy, New Orleans has a great  aquarium and zoo.  The aquarium is close to the French Quarter and the zoo is in the Garden district.  Don't bother driving to the zoo, the parking/traffic is a nightmare!  Instead, if you go, take the St. Charles trolley down to Audobon Park and then take the zoo bus to the zoo.  It's big enough accomodate a umbrella stroller....although you will need to fold the stroller up on the trolley.

We haven't been to Savannah since C. was born, so I don't have any info on that.  If you need more info on New Orleans, I have TONS!  Just let me know....

  • I've been to New Orleans in July several times.  It is very humid but I wouldn't say worse than weather we get here in Alabama.  I love NOLA....so I'm biased and will always say you should go there!

That being said, I do want to go to Savannah w/ just DH to stay at a B & B.

  • DH & I were planning a little weekend getaway in June to celebrate our 5th anniversary.  We had planned to go to New Orleans since neither of us has even been, but now I guess I'll wait to see how the oil spill affects things.  I hadn't even thought of any air quality issues, I was thinking that it would mainly be water-related issues with the beaches on the Gulf.  Thanks for bringing that point up.  Maybe we'll try to go another time if it gets bad down there.

I love ATL and there is alot to do. I've never been to Savannah, mom and dad went in December and loved it. I'd stay away from New Orleans due to the oil spill.

  • I've never been to NOLA, but I LOVE Savannah.  You could always go out to Tybee Island.
