Nervous about c-section on Thurs

So LO has decided not to arrive early like DD and so it looks like I will be having my scheduled c-section on Thurs AM.  I made the mistake of watching some TLC baby shows, some of which featured repeat c-sections.  Now I am totally freaking out about the c-section, and leaving DD for a few days and then the recovery and adjustment to 2u2.  I am sure the range of emotions is normal, and the overwhelming emotion is excitement (can't wait to see if LO is a boy or a girl),but I just had to put it out there for support.  TIA.

Re: Nervous about c-section on Thurs

  • Deep breaths, lady, deep breaths!  TLC and Discovery Health should be banned from all preggo ladies' TV schedules for this very reason! Wink

I, for one, had a wonderful c-section and recovery so they do exist despite what cable might otherwise indicate.  I literally felt great after my c-section and was up and about right away.  So much so that I overdid it though and should have rested more.  Oh yeah, major abdominal surgery is right.  I never hurt per se but definitely should have let my body rest.  That being said, I can't speak to 2u2 so I will leave that to the other capable ladies on this board. Smile

You'll be fine!  Stop watching TLC and Discovery Health!

  • Well at least yours is a planned c-sec and not an emergency one like mine. However I will say that my recovery far exceeded my expectations. I was off my pain killers before the end of the 1st week and was doinf pretty good by the end of the 2nd week. As far as handling the 2 kids - you just really have to be careful in handling DD #1 - don't lift and be very careful about lifting/carrying #2 at leas thte 1st couple of days- you don't want to tear open the incision. I also had to be careful about my DD pressing on my belly .  I think maybe I sprung back fast from this because I knew I had another child to care for...not sure how others in the same situation have fared but my doctor was very pleased by my progress at my 2 week checkup.

Good luck..I hope all goes well!!!

  • is delaying the c/s an option to give your baby a little more time to come on his/her own?

i know chemical induction is counterindicated after a c/s, but have you tried natural induction methods? walking, nipple/clitoral stimulation, swimming, rolling in wide circles on a birth ball, red raspberry leaf tea, castor oil?

  • good luck! it'll be fine!

are they allowing siblings to visit at Reston yet?

at least you can work out the logistics having it pre-scheduled. My c-s recovery from #1 was also very good, and I'm hoping for same for this one.

Be sure to post and let us know how everything went when you get a chance and of course to let us know if it's a boy or a girl!

  • Back away from the television :-) I am another one who had an easy recovery from a c-section and mine was not planned. I am sure it is nerve wracking since it is tomorrow but enjoy today and tomorrow you will have a beautiful addition to the family.

    Keep us posted!

  • Mine was a planned c-section and I had an easy recovery.

Just make sure you don't do to much too soon.  I did that and that is the only time I was in absolute misery.

The other thing I would say is make sure DC#1 knows not to touch your stomach beacuse it will hurt mommy.

I know you can't explain these things to animals, but my dog was still trying to figure out the baby and actually stepped on my stomach while holding DC and it hurt soooo bad.

  • My repeat C-section was SO much easier than the first.  I really think not going into labor before hand helped the recovery process.  As soon as I got home I was doing stairs once or twice a day and slept upstairs in bed from day one.  Before a week was out I could lift Maggie into her highchair or crib.  By two weeks I was doing everything I did before.  I only stayed on the percocet for the first week and by week 2 I was only on motrin.

I was also super freaked out by 2u2.  While it is true you do not have the time you had with #1 when they were a newborn to figure things out it is much easier because you already have figured out things out once.  It was not the complete horror that I thought it would be and I was able to ask for more help from DH than I did the first time around.  I remember saying that I just wanted to keep everyone alive for the first 12 weeks and if anyone was happy at any given point in time that would just be a bonus.  By setting my expectations low it meant I didn't get so upset when things went crazy with 2 crying babies.  We all got through it, no one is scarred for life and we do have a lot of happy memories from those first few months (a little hazy maybe from lack of sleep but I took a bunch of pics).

    Good luck!!

  • I was completely freaked out at the idea of c-sections (i wanted au naturale).  Then I had to have a surpise c-section at 32 weeks when my water broke.  I didn't have time to freak out since everything moved so quickly.  But it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought.  I was in the hospital for 5 days.  It would have been 4, but my OB said I could stay an extra day since DS was in the NICU.  I kept up with my pain meds, so I was able to walk around after the first day.  When I got home, I didn't take any pain meds and was able to do basic care of DS when visiting him (diapers, bottle, cuddling, etc.) But I didn't have a toddler to watch either, so that will probably make it more difficult.  Make sure you take a stool softener and have lots of people to help around the house.  Good luck.
