Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How small should the finger food pieces be?

My 8 months old LO sometimes chokes/gags on finger foods and sometimes throws up while eating them. We tried bananas and very soft steamed carrots and now I am afraid of trying anything else...I am wondering whether the pieces of finger foods that I am giving him are too big. How small should the finger food pieces be? The size of LO finger nail? Bigger? Smaller?  Is 8 months too early to start feeding finger foods?

  • I have read (can't remember where) to make pieces the size of LOs thumb nail. We were feeding DD finger foods at 8 mo, though she still isn't that great with a lot of them.

  • Have you tried the gerber graduate puffs? At first i was super paranoid (sometimes still am) and I will break them in half. They are already the size of a fingernail. One thing I noticed, (or I think i did)... the Parents choice puffs seem to dissolve faster than gerbers.
  • Yes, we tried the Gerber Graduates puffs (break them in half) and Mum Mums and Yogurt melts, now that I think about it, he does better eating those then "real" foods such as bananas, steamed carrots, etc. It seems like everyone's LO's are eating "real" finger foods (pieces of steamed carrots, other veggies, bananas, toast, etc.) which are probably more nutritional then puffs and Mum Mums, someone even told me that their LO was eating pieces of meat balls and spaghetti at 7 months! Interesting how my LO chokes on "real" food and does better with junk food. Like Mother like Son I guess. :)

I wouldn't stress it at 8 mo. DD doesn't do that great with most of the foods you mentioned and is still on mostly purees at almost 11 mo. She loves puffs, mum mums and the like though. I think they just dissolve better since a lot of times it seems like she tries to swallow but the food just pops right back out. Don't stress too much what other babies are doing. LOs have got to go at their own pace. Just keep working on it and he'll get it down.
