More concerns about Dash

I scheduled early intervention to come out Thurs and do a screening on him, mainly for gross motor and attachment concerns. I figured they'd come out and tell me that I'm crazy. (as an SLP, I can be a little neurotic about development) today my pedi calls me and tells me that Dash scored below average in two areas on the 9 month autism screener. He scored lower on the symbolic area and in communication. (Beth, any input?) my pedi said he doesn't strike her as a child with autism but that he may be on the spectrum. She said that the fact that we have more "global" concerns is actually reassuring. But I'm not feeling better. I'm so anxious and ready for early intervention to come out and let me know what the next step, if any, is next.

just wanted to give you hugs. I am sure that this must feel really scary and overwhelming.

Eli had major gross motor (and some fine motor) delays and he is perfectly fine. We to had issues at the 9 month screening and by his 18 month screening he was all caught up and fine.

My friend's little girl was really behind at that age. REALLY behind. She was born at 31 weeks, but even still, she was really behind. She showed no affection, she didn't seem to have any plans to use any gross motor skills, etc. And they did a little bit of therapy but my friend (the mom) hated it so much that she quit it. And now, at 3 1/2, her little girl is just fine. She's still no star athlete, but she runs and jumps and takes ballet. She just needed more time to get it all togehter... I hope that's the case for you guys too!!

I'm so sorry! We just had Max evaluated last week for gross motor delay and he scored at a 7 month level, and I know how hard it is! We will be starting early intervention PT for him and from everything I've heard from the wonderful ladies here it can make all the difference. Hang in there and hopefully they will be able to give you some reassurance and a plan.

If it helps at all, both my brother and H's brother scored really low on tests like that before they were 1. My mom did a lot of extra stuff to help my brother, while H's mom waited to see what would happen as her son got older. Both are now young men, quite smart, socially apt, and physically normal.

However, I think that knowing things like this early will really help you prepare and plan - any intervention can really help him get on track and caught up quicker. You are a great mama! Hang in there. Hugs to you!

Forgive my terrible memory but do you guys also have a lot of food allergies? There was a woman in our BCC class who had kids with some early autism type signs and as soon as she took them off wheat and dairy (and maybe some other things) they turned right around and it made a huge difference for her kids... just a thought...

Oh sweetie I'm sorry. I hope they find out what's going on with Dash. I wouldn't feel better either, but at least there's a next step. I thought about you on Mother's Day...besides all that's going on, did you have a good one?

Thanks so much ladies! It's nice to have your support. Angel, I had a great mother's day. Jill, we have had him tested for the big allergies and the only one he came up with was a very mild peanut allergy. We are going to an allergist in Tacoma next month. I'm trying to stay calm and realize that if he's a little boy with special needs then he's in the right family. I do feel like we can't catch a break with him. He still seems generally fussy. Something MUST be going on. I'm determined to get to the bottom of this.
