1st Trimester

So Confused! Can we use Clearasil or what?!

My Dr said NO on OTC acne meds, but I keep reading it's ok for spot treatments. My acne is getting so bad I feel like a teenager again! What have your Dr's told you???

Re: So Confused! Can we use Clearasil or what?!

  • My OB said it was fine but I would call and ask your OB. You just never know what they're going to say ;)

  • It didn't help anyway.  I made sure to get a brand without that ingredient they say not to have (can't remember) but it didn't help and it just made me itch and I broke out in a little rash.

I was trying clinique, Mary Kay...nothing works!  I asked my dr and he said nothing really helps.  He could give me an aointment but it probably wouldn't work so I opted to just not get it.

And all my acne stays in the same spots!!

  • My doc said it was ok to use Proactiv or the Neutrogena on the spot acne treatment because they only have 2.5% Benzoyl peroxide.
  • What is up with this pregnancy acne? My Dr told me to try to stay away from salicylic acid so I stopped using my ProActive. I have a prescription spot treatment called erythromycin and she said i can use that but I just feel weird. She said my acne might clear up after my first trimester. I hate it but I feel like the fewer chemicals I put into my bloodstream the better...
  • i have been washing my face, but i am in the same boat and not using anything topical.....my dermatologist told me nothing has been tested enough and i am not willing to risk it.

i think that it will pass, but it really does suck, huh!??!

My derm gave me Clindamycin 1% and Benzoly Per 5% but I haven't started using either one yet because I just don't feel comfortable with it.  I have been washing my face with a salicylic acid soap but I guess I should stop.  ugh.

  • My Dr. said OTC is fine.  Its the prescription strength you want stay away from.  I think if the OTC was a problem, they would have to print a warning to pregnant women on the label.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

I specifically asked about OTC cleansers with salicyclic acid and she said it was fine.  Prescription strength is not.

Dude, I'd use salicylic acid over eurythromycin ANYDAY.

OTC cleansers are fine.  Just don't eat them.

Thanks, this post has me thinking I'm growing a baby with an extra arm or two because I use a 0.5% salicylic acid face wash.  I mean really, how much could you absorb before you rinse it off?

Thats fine. This came from the americanpregnancy.org website, and the drugsaftey website Im not making this stuff up!

What about over-the-counter acne medicated creams and astringents?

When choosing over-the-counter medicated acne cleansers and treatments, it is advised that you consult with your health care provider first. There are products that contain benzoyl peroxide, which have been recommended safe for pregnant women to use. However, there are over-the-counter medications that you may want to avoid such as products containing salicylic acids. Always consult your health care provider before taking ANY medications during pregnancy, whether prescription or over-the-counter.

  • Mine said spot treatment was fine. Obviously no Retin A.
  • I read a "home remedy" was to put dabs of wet baking soda on acne...anyone ever tried this?  I have my doubts it would work, but I might test it out if the acne gets worse.  Thankfully, it's mostly my entire chest and not as bad (yet) on my face.

  • OBs are split so I'd just stay away. Acne treatments won't help you anyways because your hormones will over power them. It will get better after the baby is born. It sucks, mine was terrible with DD but cleared up after.

Sorry, I consulted a few websites that marked Erythromycin as a potential cause of birth defects, which is why I said to avoid it.

Salicylic acid is aspirin.  Plenty of women take small doses of baby aspirin (81mg) daily throughout pregnancy -- and thus using it in a face wash doesn't bother me.   To each their own.  If you and your doc are comfy with it, so be it.

I used Proactiv throughout my 1st pregnancy and the baby has no extra arms or legs :)

Just talk with your doctor and make your own choices.  There are some to def stay away from (like Retin-A), some that are iffy (Salicylic acid), and some that for the most part should be fine (benzoyl peroxide).

    LOL... this.

Salicylic acid is fine, just not the really high percentage kind (like what you'd find in wart remover).  I use Proactiv, it was okayed by my doctor.  Topical stuff (unless wart remover, which gets into your bloodstream) is fine.
