We are looking to nanny share with another family and just wondering how other people have found the experience?
Also, do you pay under the table or on the books and how does that work? As the employer do you need to do anything or is that the nanny's responsibility like any other contractor?

We're in a nanny-share and it's been a great experience. To answer your questions: We pay on the books. We are not comfortable paying under the table and breaking the law. It is a little complicated, but not too bad once you get the hang of it--we consulted once with an accountant about our tax obligations. We withhold her taxes and pay certain taxes (state) quarterly. The tax stuff felt overwhelming to me at first but it's really not bad at all.
We also pay her a stipend for her health insurance--$200/month ($100/family). This is a really nice benefit if the nanny doesn't have health insurance and is not particularly expensive.
Also a nanny is NOT an independent contractor--so the law for contractors don't apply.
Good luck! We have been really happy with the share setup, it's a great benefit to have lots of one-on-one attention while still allowing the little ones to socialize.
