Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Need help with starting solids . . .

So DS has been on rice cereal for about a month now. He got constipated so the peditrician said to switch him to oatmeal cereal and give him pear or apple infant juice. I am against juice for many reasons so decided to progress to another solid last week - prunes.

Worked like a charm and so now we give him prunes or applesauce with his cereal once a day. We are trying to progress to adding a vegetable so we added green beans next. When I feed him he wants the bottle. He used to take the cereal great but now that I asked daycare to feed him the prunes and cereal seperate instead of mixed together so he can learn each new food's taste, texture, etc. Does it matter about feeding bottle first or solids first? What do you do?

Well he just gets upset when we try to feed him. It's like he wants the bottle. Not sure what to do.

So far his schedule is:

7AM Nurse DS

10:30 AM Daycare feeds him 6 ounces of formula and feeds him cereal and prunes

1:30 PM Daycare feeds him 6 ounces of formula and feeds him green beans and applesauce

4:00 PM Daycare feeds him 5 ounces of formula only

5:15 PM I pick him up from daycare

6:30 PM Bath time

7:00 PM Nurse DS to bed

What do I need to be doing different? Any opinions out there?

Re: Need help with starting solids . . .

  • I do bottles and solids separate (usually an hour apart). The formula/BM is more important nutritionally, so I do the bottle first and then the solids later to give her time to have an appetite again. She drinks 8 oz bottles so she would be too full to be interested in the solids at the same time.

  • Here's my schedule

    6:30 am 8 oz formula

    8:30 am fruit/cereal

    10:30 am 8 oz formula

    11:30 am veggie/fruit

    3:00 pm 8 oz formula

4:30 pm snack (mum mum or puffs and juice)

5:45 pm Dinner fruit or veggie or finger foods

    7:00 pm 8 oz formula

  • Looks like you're doing just fine.  Don't sweat it if LO refuses solids. The formula is much more important at this point.  Offer bottle first and if LO eats the formula but refuses the solids, no big deal
