When did you stop working? or plan to stop working?

I asked my OB last week when does she advise me  to stop working and she said at 30weeks (mid July).   I thought that was very early, since I wasn't planning to stop until sometime in 35 weeks (8/25).  She said if I think I can then I can work up to whenever and she will work with me.  So now, I am thinking I should work in the office until 32 weeks and then work from home for a week or two before I start my maternity.  Or should I just start to work at home at 30 weeks for a few weeks and call it the quits?

 What did you guys do?

Re: When did you stop working? or plan to stop working?

  • I worked until the end.  The last few weeks were rough, but I was hell bent on saving all of the leave that I could.

  • Work is a big topic today. I would say wait it out and see how you feel. Some make it that long, others don't.

  • I worked 10 days past my due date with DD and because I did so well my OB said she feels comfortable with me working as long as I want (well pending any complications).  So my plan is to suck it up and work as long as I can.  Just hoping the babies and I stay healthy so I can save my days for after they come instead of having to use them before.
  • Just left this past Friday. My OB had no real opinion regarding it but did say I would probably *want* to call it quits around 30. I had a desk job but was getting mighty uncomfortable and exhausted by the end of the day. A 40+ min commute to work (so 40+ min from DH, family and the hospital I will deliver at) was another factor leading to my decision. Oh, and I will not be returning so the 12 wk maternity/FMLA was not taken into consideration. Had I planned to return, I think I could probably stick it out another 4 weeks maybe..

  • Great questions!  My OB told me the same thing... around 30-32 wks, start working from home, if possible.

  • I had a 30/40 commute to work with a high pressure job, worked through lunch, and usually worked about a 10 hour day.

Around 22 weeks my doctor restricted my workdays to 8 hours max. She told me she would probably pull me out of work between 29-32 weeks.  I was definitely not supposed to work past 32 weeks.  I laughed.

Around 25 weeks, my doctor restricted my workdays to 5 to 6 hours in the office, 2 to 3 hours from home (8 hour workday max).

At 29 weeks I told her she was right.  I couldn't do it anymore.  I stopped working at 29 weeks, and I couldn't be happier that I did.  FMLA time wasn't an issue for me.  I think if I HAD to stick it out, I could have done it for another 4 weeks or so, but it would have been really hard.  So far my babies have grown nice and big, and I've been able to keep them baking!

  • I let my boss know well in advance that MoMs often have to stop around 28 weeks and we played it by ear at that point.  At 30 weeks I felt that I was pushing myself too much, although the pregnancy was going fine.  I stopped at 32 weeks.  I'd prepare to be gone as early as 28 weeks, but listen to your body.  I know that sounds super early, but it starts getting tough then.

  • I had all intentions of working up to 35-36 weeks but by week 29-30 I hit a wall. I went on leave at 31 weeks.

I'm a teacher and the commute, walking, standing... it all became too much and left me out of breath and with crazy, swollen feet.

  • I work all the way up till 5 days before I had them. My doctor took me off of work on 2/1 and I went in for induction 2/4 & they came 2/5.  I am glad I did b/c I don't know if I would have survived sitting around at home not doing much, plus I wanted to save all my FMLA leave for when the babies were here.

I've been telling/preparing my boss that I'll probably have to leave around 30w.  When I talked to my OB, she thought that I might need to leave closer to 28w.  For now, we're playing it by ear since I've had no complications and still feel good.  My job is fairly high stress with long hours, though, so I need to take that into consideration.  Whenever I go on leave, I'll end up being on short term disability up until the babies come.  At that point, my 12 maternity leave will kick in.

  • I had no plans and was doing great but then was forced to be on bedrest at 30 weeks for hypertension and GD.

Well, in my experience, I made plans and God laughed at me. ?

Planned to stop working at 28 weeks (I'm a 3rd grade teacher), but was forced to stop at 26 because of PTL. ?I was having a great pregnancy up until the day I had to go to L&D, so you never know.?Have been on bedrest since!?

    Good luck!?

  • My plan was to work until I went into labor, broke my water or my cervix gave out.  Well my cervix decided to be a wimp at a mere 23 1/2 weeks.  So here I am - at home on modified bed rest - hoping to make it to 37 weeks.  Sometimes you just can't plan (although I totally had a plan in my head).....life will just do what it wants!!  I know some docs pull their MoMs from work early - mine does not unless like me there is an issue.

  • I thought I'd be able to work up until I delivered, but I just went into L&D with preterm contractions that wouldn't let up.  My OB checked me and I was already dialated 1cm.  So between the consistent contractions, dialation, and my recently diagnosed GD, my doctor wrote me out of work immediately.  She did let me go into the office yesterday to tie up some loose ends, but no more work.  I'm a little bummed because I really would prefer to have my FMLA time off to spend with my girls and not sitting around the house.  On the other hand, I'm hoping the rest will keep these girls cooking a little bit longer.
  • My OB wants me to stop working at 28 weeks. He said he would support me if I felt well enough to continue working for a couple more weeks after that. I work in ER and ICU all 12 hour shifts. The likelyhood of me actually wanting or being physically able to do my job effectively at 28 weeks may not be realistic. I'm just playing it by ear, we'll see how I feel by then. My employer will put me on short-term disability,  until the kids are born then my year long maternity leave will kick in. Gotta love being Canadian!

  • I just worked my last 8 hour shift last night and it was rough (I'm about 33 weeks).  From here on out I'm only working 4 hour shifts.  My doctor didn't tell me too, I just listened to my body.  I'd just play it by ear if you can.

  • I just listened to my body and quit working at 29 weeks.  My dr didn't really have an opinion but was happy to write me a note.  I am so glad I stopped when I did.  My family would have been happy with me stopping at 25 weeks since I am a teacher and on my feet all day but I was happy leaving at 29 weeks.
  • My Dr said things will become "iffy" at 28 weeks becuase I'm on my feet all day at work.  As it is I'm already feeling it on my long/busy days.  I'm just taking it as it comes.
