Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did you give a blanket?

We use sleep sacks but recently my son has refused to go to sleep without a blanket. With one, he sleeps like a little angel. He still wakes 2-3x a night but at least he'll actually sleep in his crib.

I'm still a little nervous about him having it although he actually moves less than he did without one. He sleeps on his back again instead of rolling to his tummy.

He also has a lovey- are those little blanket squares a suffocation hazard, too?

Re: When did you give a blanket?

  • DD has had one for a couple months now.

  • DS has the small Little Giraffe Blankey &  he will NOT fall asleep with out it!!! He totally has an attatchment to it. I let him fall asleep with it & then take it out of the crib. When he wakes up to eat he's usually so tired he will sleep without it. DH used to put it above his head before he realized he could grab it, just so he could feel it on his head.
  • I tried taking it away from him after he sleeps, but he wakes up within 1/2 hour of me taking it off. Little brat- he inherited Mom's love of blankets!

His room is pretty warm plus he has a sleeper and sleep sack but he still wants a blankie.

  • today actually. it was colder than usual and i wanted him to be warm enough for his nap. i gave him a crocheted blanket though, so it has holes.

he sleeps with loveys too - one like the one you mentioned. he moves around so much that it will not suffocate him. he mostly just plays with them and then pushes them aside when he goes to sleep.

ETA: he is 9 months old.

We stopped using sleep sacks around 6 months. If we put LO down while he's still awake, he pulls his blanket to his nose and he's fine.

We gave DD a blanket around 7-8 months... we use a small afghan (the holes made me feel better :) ) and tuck it around her. Sometimes she leaves it, but usually she kicks it off. It made me really nervous at first (and sometimes still does), but she slept better as soon as we started letting her sleep with it. She also has a small square "lovey" that she sleeps with too.

  • DD gets a lovie (the small 18x18 blanket) and has since 4ish months.  She's a back sleeper for the most part, so I place it next to her head and kind of tuck part of it underneath her head.  Now that she can pull it and moves around much more, I just watch her on the video monitor until she falls asleep since she plays with it/rubs it to get to sleep and then move it to the side if she's pulled it over her face.
  • We have been using one since he was rolling very well, semi crawling, and was able to hold his head up. It made me feel like he could move if something happened. So for about two months now.

  • by three months we were using blankets only sometimes he kicks them off but he is also getting good at putting them back on.  He could roll over before we changed to blakets the sleep sacks weren't working for us.

  • I've used a blanket since we brought her home from the hospital.  Now she has two.  They are both crocheted and very holey so I don't worry about her suffocating.  She gets excited when she sees her blankets and knows it's bed time.

  • we gave her blanket since day one (it's cold in our area) and darn house heater temp gage lies in the middle of the night =/

however, i pulled out all blankets two weeks ago... she rolled the blanket around her head covering her face. we were lucky it happend during day time and got it off her face right away. she's getting stronger and is able to remove the tucked in blanket from the mattress.

i recently got a knitted blanket with holes, i hear those are better to use. but i don't know if that is warm as a blanket.

her lovely is her burp cloth...we're so luck cause her burp cloth are all the same. if she trully needs her burp cloth to fall asleep on her bed, we take it out before we hit the sack.

  • Do you have any Aden & Anais blankets?  They are breathable but warm enough, which sounds like the perfect solution for you.  The lovey is fine - my DD has had her since 6 months and it's been a life/sleepsaver!  Smile

  • DS#1 (now 3) slept in Halo sleepsacks until about 2yr, and it wasn't until the following fall that he slept with a blanket.  He slept great in his Halo sacks, and it wasn't worth the risk to offer a loose blanket.
