Question for the toddler mamas

Tyson is officially bottle free!

Now, my question is are we supposed to get rid of the before bed feeding?  I think we created a monster way back when we first started our bedtime routine that after his bath, he always gets a bottle (now sippy).

Is this something we need to cut out altogether or is it okay for him to continue with some milk before bed?  He only takes about 5-6oz.

Thanks!

Re: Question for the toddler mamas

  • Our pedi told us he wanted us to stop the bedtime bottle at E's 1 year check-up.  We did it slowly over a couple months and replaced it with a sippy we give her about a half hour before bed and it does not go upstairs when we go night-night.  She doesn't miss it at all.  Good luck!

  • DD never took bottles, but she does get a sippy and a small snack about half an hour before bed. (but my kids need to fit in as many calories as possible during the day. I'm not sure about "normal" kids.)
  • Yay for being bottle free so early!  We weren't bottle free untill 16 months or so.  It was around then that we stopped doing the bedtime bottle.  We just took her cues and if she was waking up in the middle of the night, we gave her milk before bed.  Something that we've been doing for a few months (on the rec of someone on here) is giving her a snack before bedtime-banana, yogurt, etc.  She's not always a good eater at dinner time and that way she always gets *something* at least in her tummy.

We also offer the bedtime snack about 30 minutes before bed (yogurt, grapes, banana, etc).  Haley also takes a sippy of water instead of milk in the evening (anytime after dinner).  That way, we can brush her teeth after her snack and then if she has some water, it's not a big deal.  Although now that we're starting to potty train, we're trying to cut down on how much water she gets in the evening.

We also do the 30 minutes before bedtime rituals begin snack.  Usually yogurt, and then we do either milk or water on his cue(depending on whether DS has already had his teeth brushed).

  • We didn't worry about cutting out milk/water before bedtime until we started night time potty training around age 3.

And really, even now, we let him have it because he knows to get up and pee in the potty when he has to throughout the night - it was just when we were trying to get him to not pee at night in a diaper/pull up.

We just always brush teeth right before bed.  So our routine is to offer drink/snack before we head up for bath.  Then he gets his bath, potties, brushes his teeth and gets 2 stories - and is always welcome to water after teeth brushing.

I think it's really only a concern if they are falling asleep during that "feeding" because of their teeth.
