Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone use AFLAC or other supplemental insurance for pregnancy and pp?

Because I won't get any paid leave after we have #2 I was thinking maybe it would be a good idea to get AFLAC.  If you had it, will you share your experience.  I know you need to have the policy in place at least 3 months prior to becoming pg, so we will do that in late Aug. or Sept.

TIA!

  • I just signed up for AFLAC about a month before I went on ML so it didn't help me, but I was told that you should definately be on it for at least 3 months before TTC.  You have to be on the policy 10 months before the baby is born or you won't be covered. God forbid LO come 2 monts early, you would not be covered which is why they tell you to go on 3 months before.  I believe it is supposed to cover 60% of your wages for 12 weeks.  And if I remember correctly, you can choose to get this weekly, biweekly, monthly, or one lump sum.

  • I just signed up for disability through Aflac and the way I understand it, I can't get pregnant until 10 months after signing up.  When we did the math, it will definitely be worth it since we know we are going to have another baby soon.  After we collect on it, we'll keep it if we are going to try again soon, otherwise we'll cancel.

  • I signed up for the hospital plan through Aflac. It was wonderful.

I had my regular health insurance through work, but didn't have short term disability. I didn't see the need for it since we weren't trying to get pregnant. The hospital plan covers hospital stays, regardless of what your in for, so this could have been used if I needed a surgery or was in the hospital for any other reason, not only labor and delivery.

When I had Alex, the benefits I recieved through the hospital plan were:

200 dollars for delivery (I found out if I had a higher up plan, it would have been 400 since I had a C-section)

500 dollars for each 24 hours I was in the hospital. So, I recieved a check for 1700 dollars at about 6 weeks PP.

Alex was admitted into Childrens for jaundice at 5 days and I found out after I returned to work that he was also covered for 30 days (from birth) under my hospital plan. I recieved 500 additional dollars for that stay.

When I returned to work after my mat leave, I bumped up my coverage to the higher paying hospital policy (in case #2 happened), and added on short term disability.
