1st Trimester

In case you are worried about your lack of symptoms

A lot of people on here are posting that they are worried that something is wrong because they aren't experiencing any morning sickness or other symptoms.  I know the information is out there, but just in case you haven't gotten a chance to read up, morning sickness and most other symptoms aren't supposed to start until around 7-8 weeks at least.  I know when I was pregnant the first time all I knew was that it happened first trimester, but no one says when.  I think it's normal that you usually find out you're pregnant and then about a month later everything kicks in.  And I think some people never get anything at all.  I just thought I'd pass this along, since I know we are all very nervous about morning sickness and thought this would ease some people's minds a little.  If you haven't gotten any symptoms, enjoy the time before they start.

  • This should be a sticky. I wish they had topics at the top that addressed the 9 million same questions we get day after day.

I'm 10 weeks. I've barfed twice. Both times after dinner/taking my PNV. I consider myself blessed!

  • My doc also said that morning sickness will generally set in around 7-8 weeks.  I'm queasy now, but no vomiting so far, but I have no misgivings that I'm going to be m/s free just because I don't have it now.

I think it's funny how on movies or TV shows you hear them say, "I know I'm pregnant because I'm two days late and I'm throwing up."  Maybe that's why we all think we should be sicker, earlier.

  • So true.  And symptoms come and go.  I feel miserably nauseous one day and fine the next.  Nausea usually kicks in around week 7 and it actually seems like most people I know IRL who are pregnant don't even experience m/s.  In fact, I read a statistic somewhere that quoted a higher percentage of women NOT experiencing m/s.

  • I still don't understand how the average woman doesn't understand that symptom-free pregnancies exist. Where are your mothers and aunts who can tell you this?

  • Thank you for posting this! It does get old seeing this question over and over again. Here's what I've learned- early in 1st tri- no symptoms = normal. Later in 1st tri- lessening symptoms = normal. Plus, ever pregnancy is different! I've heard only to be concerned if things go away suddenly or if your boobs were getting bigger then suddenly decrease, etc...

    I second the sticky idea.

Wow, I hadn't even thought of this.  I bet that is why so many people are expecting symptoms right away.  With my first pregnancy, it started around 8 weeks and was gone by 12, so the good news is that morning sickness, if you get it, doesn't stick around for months and months.

I know they exist but I've never know someone to go a whole pregnancy symptom free. So in my experience it doesn't seem to be the norm and is a little unnerving to have nothing but a postive test to tell me I'm pregnant.

  • Sorry!  I think I was the last person to post this!  I do not have any women around me to discuss this with because we are not telling our friends yet and there are no babies in our family...on either side.  I did search the boards to see if this question was asked before and it was...many times but I did not see anything posted about having symptoms and then having them go away.

We have been trying for almost 4 years and this is my first pregnancy....I'm freaked about everything...I'm sure you understand.

It's okay. No one is jumping on you. It's just a very frequently asked question.

I didn't post it because I was annoyed at all the questions.  I just thought it might help people not worry so much.  We have enough to worry about during the 1st trimester.  We shouldn't worry about NOT having morning sickness.

honestly, idk why people get so upset about reading these questions.  Yes, they may be asked often, but you don't have to open the post.  You don't have to respond.  If you're that sick of giving the same answers over and over, stop giving them...  JMO...

OP just said that she isn't upset... she's just trying to help ease some peoples' minds. It's okay if you have one day when your boobs don't hurt. That's all.

i put the full blame on the entire internet for this. message boards have created mass miscarriage hysteria.  on the one hand, it is more talked about so who knows if it is more common, statistically. on the other hand, maybe it is really is more common!  Helllll if I know.

but I also side eye people whose back up is "i have been trying for 4 yrs so i am nervous".  didn't you read any preg books in that time?  I am not pointing fingers specifically, but it really is easy to find out what happens in weeks 3 - , say, 11...and what is common.  People are just too worried.

I agree! DH almost asked me to stop looking at the Bump msg. boards b/c of all of the miscarriages. I've learned to just stop clicking on them. You're right, though- a lot of paranoia. I know it's scary, but it doesn't help to stress over every little thing.

Oh I know, I'm not denying that I kind of shoot myself in the foot by comparing my lack of symptoms to everyone on here though we're all "normal."

Just like anything else you can freak yourself out if you try hard enough.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! This should totally be a sticky!

I don't mind people comparing their experiences with others--that's part of what we're here for--but as someone who's mostly symptomless, it bugs me a little people make comments that advance the myth more morning sickness = a healthier baby. Everyone's experience is different, and pregnancy symptoms have nothing to do with your baby's health.

  • Yes...I have read a few books in my 4 years of TTC and in NONE of them do they talk about some of the things we talk about here!  If you dont want to read my post then dont open it.  I have every right to be nervous...I am considered high risk for a variety of reasons and thought this was a safe place to ask questions.  Clearly there are experts on here that will decide what you are allowed to ask!

Oh my. It's okay, I promise. Yes, you can be nervous. None of us disagreed with that. The original intent of this post was to put peoples' minds at ease. It just gets old to see the same posts over and over and over again. And many pregnancies have little to no symptoms and turn out just fine..

    settle down brushfire!  geez!

this over reaction does instill in me that you are indeed hypersensitive. there are quite a number of girls around here that need a brown paper bag for their daily hyperventilations.

best advice I can give - keep notes and talk to your doctor. ask every question you can.  read your books more closely.  all books I have read have said that there are plenty of people that are symptomless.

That's the first question I asked my mom. She was never sick!

  • I have barfed...zero times!!

I consider myself lucky and don't dwell on the fact that I spend my weekends shopping and not hugging the toilet!!

  • brushfire...I like that!

And you hit it right on the head...I am hypersensitive...especially to insensitive comments.  I will remember to come to this forum prepared...paper bag in hand.  Thank you for the good advice on keeping notes for my doctor...I will do that....I have many questions.
