bf'ers - how much are you eating?

Wow, DD is two weeks on Thursday and breastfeeding is going great! So is my weight loss and I'm not doing a thing. I've already lost 25lbs (most of which was water gained a few weeks before delivery) and i have 17 to go. But my appetite? I'm a little worried about that! I am always hungry! Especially for carbs and sweets!

What is your hunger like? Does it slow down at all as LO got older? I don't want my eating to catch up with me an my weight loss to stop:)

I too am constantly hungry, and I allow myself to eat, I just try to make good choices about it.

Sweets are my nemesis, but I'm dealing. I find that having a high-fiber breakfast helps.

I know you are excited to lose the weight, I am too, but you need to make sure you are still eating enough to keep up your supply.

I have three big meals and an afternoon snack. Sometimes a nighttime snack too.

  • I'm eating about how I ate pre-pregnancy maybe a little more... but then again I didn't really eat much more when I was pregnant.  My OB and lactation consultant told me not to diet, but that breastfeeding women don't really need all the extra calories that you often read they do.  A couple hundred more than prepregnancy should probably do it and its much more important to make sure you are getting a balanced nutritious diet than a certain number of calories.  Also, I did have a much bigger appetite for the first week and I just went with it and ate whatever whenever but it got much better after that.  HTH!

  • I  eat a whole grain cereal for breakfast, have a banana as a snack, eat a sandwich for lunch, eat a mid day snack usually fruit, then I have dinner and a chocolate granola bar for snack. I try to keep fruit around the house so that if I get hungry I can snack on something that is healthy, quick and I only need one hand.
  • I'm hungry, and eat 5 small meals and/or healthy snacks per day, plus tons of decaf tea and water. I BF'd DD1 for 11mos (incl. into my pg w/DD2) and was hungry the whole time! I also lost all but 5lbs of the weight I'd gained, so I am not worried this time around either.
  • I eat all the time and I especially crave carbs and sweets.
I was down to my pp weight at 3 weeks and haven't gained any of it back despite frequent small meals/snacks.
  • bf'ing is going wonderful. I'm producing way more this time than I did last (even though I made last time work) and ds2 is getting really chunky...lol.

I'm not that hungry though. I could take it or leave it really and I have only lost 15 pounds (gained 40). I am extremely thirsty though (mainly for ice water or milk).

  • thanks girls! i should say that i have been doing no form of dieting, i've just eaten when i've been hungry. but i love the idea of keeping fresh fruit out and ready all the time. i'm going to give that a shot and try to make better decisions about what i eat.
  • It's normal.  Basically, the baby is sucking the energy out of you.  They say you lose 500 calories a day just by breastfeeding.  And trust me, the hunger doesn't go away.  I lost like 15 pounds since I've have my LO (she's almost 3 months now) and I'm eating like a pig.  At least I feel like it.  But I'm craving carbs, sweets, and fruits.  I'm mainly hungry after I BF.  Not any other time, just BF.  If you think about it, you are feeding 15 minutes on each side and you are doing it anywhere from 8-10 times a day, when they are newborn.  I'm feeding her at least 6-7 times a day at this time, and I'm totally starving even at that.  But my neighbor says its normal...she went through it too.  So no worries.
  • and its great to hear that breast feeding is going well for everyone!!!
  • I'm the opposite, I EBF and my appetite is non-existent. I often look at the clock and it's already 3pm and I've forgotten to eat lunch. I also have found that nothing really sounds good to me. Most the foods I love aren't appealing, so even when I remember to eat, deciding what to eat is a chore.

i feel the same way. i often realize i have not eaten breakfast OR lunch around 3 or 4 pm. not because i'm hungry, but because i start thinking about what to make for dinner when my husband comes home. i NEED to be better about food and drink. i often consume juice and tea and will only drink ice cold water (with ice) every so often. but bfing is going well, so...(and i have only lost 30 lbs..i have 20 to go...)

  • I don't eat any more than I did before. I just eat smarter. I lost all my pregnancy weight. Now I'm just trying to tone up so I'm bikini ready this summer.

This is me exactly!!  I'm not that hungry.  I lost 26 pounds in the first 3 weeks and now have stopped losing.. I still have 21 pounds to lose to get to pp weight.  I too am thirsty ALL the time!

This exactly. Most days I have to remind myself that I have to eat lunch and I never know what to eat for dinner because nothing sounds good to me anymore.

  • I have absolutely no appetite now. I have to remind myself to eat otherwise I would probably go all day without eating a thing. Weird, right? When I do eat it has been mostly carbs. It's the only thing that sounds appetizing.
