Has anyone's DS had surgery for hypospadia? DS has a mild case and is scheduled for surgery this Friday. I am terrified

I know I've been told it's nothing major...but it's going to be hard to let them take him knowing he's going to be put to sleep and cut on. And then he'll have a catheter in for a week so I'm dreading that too. Just any reassurance would be amazing. Anyone been through this?
Re: Moms of boys: hypospadias
DS had his hypospadias repaired the end of January (he was 9 months old). I was so worried about him being put to sleep. He had his surgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and there they let me go into the ER and watch him go under. That was the WORST part- I won't lie to you. You just have to trust in his healthcare team. The anasiologist are trained to work with children, you just have to put your faith in them. Ask all the questions you want the morning of the surgery.
DS' hypospadias was believed to be minor but turned out to be a lot worse than they thought. They expected the surgery to take less than an hour, and it ended up taking a little over 3. He woke up from the anasia great. Some kids have a very hard time with that part and cry for hours on end, because they feel wierd and don't understand why. DS was just extra sleepy all day and wanted to suck on something. He NEVER took a pacifier his whole life, but that day and that day only he wanted one all day. Do you breastfeed? If so talk to your doctor about breastfeeding when you son is waking up in the hospital. The doctors will want your son to get something in his belly before they discharge you to make sure they don't get sick to their stomachs. The nurses at Johns Hopkins wouldn't let me BF DS because they said that dairy could upset his belly which might be true for cows milk but not for BM. They wanted to give him apple juice which he had never had before- I told them absolutely not. We settled on pedilite (sp?).
I will not lie. The week after surgery was hell. The catheter made diaper changes interesting and with a mobile baby who doesn't stay still during diaper changes it made it a 2 person job. By the end of the week the dressing on his stiches SMELLED HORRIBLE. You could smell him coming. DS had to take medicine for blader spasms that were caused by the catheter (very common- they send you home with this medicine in case you need it). This medicine had a side effect of "trouble staying asleep." They whole week DS was on it the only way he would sleep more than 30 minutes at a time was in my arms. We "slept" on the couch all night and I had my mom watch him during the day so I can nap. Do you work FT? If so I suggest taking the first week off of work. Other then the sleeping, DS was his normal self the day after the surgery. The way he was playing you would have never known he had surgery.
I hope I covered everything. Please feel free to ask me more questions. I know what you are going through and it seems like there wasn't anyone else around going through the same thing.
DSs case turned out not to be as bad as they first believed.
OB and Pedi though he'd have to have this huge repair and then the Uro Surgeon said not really but he won;t know for sure till they get in there.
We were terrified (to be expected) ..... long story short ... the whole deal took about 2 hrs. We got to the room when DS just woke and he was creaming but calmed down as soon as I held him.
our experience was different from pp. We didn't have a cath. in. We were told to soak him in the tub on the 5th day to take of his "airplane" bandage. I cried!!!! He screamed and his poor thing was purple.
After about a week and a half he was back to normal!!!
But now he has great aim and distance when peeing .....
GL!
Thank you guys! That helps so much! I know it's gonna be a difficult next couple of weeks, but it's nice to know others have survived it
If I have any other questions..I know who to ask now!
