1st Trimester

Metformin and pregnancy?

My doctor told me to continue to take Metformin in my first trimester.  I am wondering if any of you ladies took it and contine it after you get pregnant.

Re: Metformin and pregnancy?

  • I took it up until about 8 weeks then my RE said that I could quit taking it. I was primarily taking it just to help with ovulation so that is why he told me I could stop. I think most doctors are different. I had my regular OB appt today and he asked if the RE told me to stop taking it and I said yes. He said all RE's are different and since I have PCOS they will watch my levels more closely anyhow.

  • I continued to take it.  My RE told me it could help decrease the risk of miscarriage.  Unfortunately it didn't for me, as I had a m/c at 8w6d but I did a lot of reading and found this to be the general consensus.
  • I decreased but continue to take it- my endocrinologist told me to stop, but oBGYNs generally believe you stay on it. It decreases miscarraige rate from 45% to the 'normal' rate, helps reduce risk of GD and may help with breastfeeding as ladies with PCOS often have trouble breastfeeding due to low progesterone levels.

  • OP and those staying on it, how much met do you take daily?

  • I take 500MG 2 x a day.

The thing is 2 different infertility specialist from the same clinic I go to, told me different things.  My doctor said to continue metformin, the other doctor said I should stop.

    This is so confusing.

  • My doctor told me I could quit taking it after my BFP.

That could be because I was on it to regulate cycle length instead of to help me ovulate.

Yes, I think there is quite the battle about this right now, totally depends on the doctor- staying on it is quite a new idea and a lot of docs aren't comfortable with it.

  • Both my RE and my OB said I will take it through my pregnancy. I take 1500mg a day.
  • Hopping over from 2nd tri.  I was told to stay on until I reached the end of 1st tri.  I was on 1000mg/day and have had no changes since I stopped taking it.

My nurse practitioner who prescribed it to speed up my metabolism (which after reading a few of these post about fertility & metformin, it may be the reason for my conception) told me to stop taking it once we found out I was pregnant but my endocronologist told me to keep taking it and my OB didn't tell me to stop when I brought it in, so I'm still taking 500mg twice a day right now...I decided to listen to my specialist.

  • I am on 1000mg a day and my RE advised I continue taking it. Not sure if I will be told to stop after first Tri is over or if I will continue throughout the pregnancy.
  • I take 1500mg a day and my OB has instructed me to take it until I am 12 weeks.
  • My RE said I could stop taking it at 9 weeks. My OB said I should continue taking it throughout my entire pregnancy.  I take 1500mg/day.
