Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Weight as a factor in starting solids?

So I just read an article about when your baby might be ready for solids (although, I plan to wait until 6 months unless DD tells me otherwise)... and it said that one of the signs is when your babies birth-weight doubles. Really? DD was 8lbs 11oz at birth and is currently only 10lbs and some odd oz now. Doc said last week that DD is healthy- she's tall and slender, but not unhealthy-skinny or anything. Have your LO's doubled (or close to doubled) their birth-weights?

Re: Weight as a factor in starting solids?

  • I am pretty sure that DD's weight has at least doubled, but I will find out for sure today!  she was a little peanut when she was born though, only 6 lbs when we left the hospital...

  • My DS has not doubled birth weight yet. He was 10lbs at birth, and was 18lbs at 4 months.

My dr said to hold off on starting solids until he was eating over 32oz of formula a day. She didn't mention anything about weight.

DS was 8 lbs 10 oz at birth, 13 lbs 8 oz at 2 months, and we have our 4 month appointment next week.  But I believe he's probably around 15-16 pounds at this point.

I had never heard of that as a factor, but I will be talking to the pedi next week about when to potentially start solids.  I would also like to wait until 6 months.  We'll see what he says and make a decision then.

  • My daughter is 1 oz. away from doubling her birth weight.  She will be 6 months old on Thursday. From what I have read they are supposed to double their birth weight at 6 months and triple at a year.
  • Mine had almost doubled at their 2 month visit.  James was  5lb15oz and and Eli was 6lb15oz at birth and at 2 months James was 10lb11oz and Eli was 13lb 7oz.

My daughter was teeny at birth - just 5lbs 6oz, so, yes, she has doubled her birth weight. I think she had doubled it by 3 months or so.

  • Samuel doubled his at 4 months. He was born 7lb 14oz and was 16 at his 4 month appt. His pedi told me to wait unil his is 6 months and is sitting up by himself. The sitting up thing is to make him easier to spoon feed. She didn't say anything about weight. She wasn't worried about solids because he has been gaining well.

  • DS was 9lbs 7oz at birth. He has his 4 month appt Monday, and we'll have the official weight then, but our scale at home has him at 17 lbs right now. He hasn't quite doubled his birth weight, but is close.
