Babies: 9 - 12 Months

My DD beats the $hiiiT out of us.

She is so mean sometimes. She will pick up a toy and throw it at us, hit us with it, Pull my hair, smack us in the face. Of course we try to correct her and say no thats not nice, we dont hit.... You know the drill. But it seems like she gest a kick out of it. Do your LOs have a mean streak?

DD loves to smack my chest. When she does, I put her down and turn my back to her. That seems to help.

  • Mean implies a conscious intent to hurt.  I don't belive a 11 month old has that capability of intent and forethought.  I think they may think your response is fun or the action is fun.  DD will sometimes pull or kick, but, as best I can tell, she just thinks hair is interesting and it's fun to move her legs in a new way.  I stop her, tell her "Don't kick mommy. It hurts."  I make a sad face and then move her on to something else.
  • Not intentionally...but if I tell her no (like don't touch the fire extinguisher) she smiles a devilish grin and does it again.
  • I think a baby can be mean on purpose.  I have seen his face when he is beating on his brother.  I don't think they know that it hurts but I do think he knows what he is doing.  Now I think he knows, he did not know at like 6/7 months when he first started hitting.  So we just do the same thing you do.  We tell him NO NO and be gentle.  He is getting better but he still does it every so often.  He really goes off if DS1 takes something from him.  He lunges at him to get it back.  They learn pretty early to be territorial about things.  I was shocked that they have started fighting this early on.
