Sleeping on a cot at daycare?

The cots are cute.  Totally ridiculous, but this is probably the number 1 thing I am quite curious about for when my girls start daycare!  The have never slept in anything other than a PnP and their cribs.  I have these visions of them being laid down on them and them just getting up and running around the room.  Seriously, my 2 will have NO IDEA WTF to do!  I can't even begin to imagine them actually having a DEEP SLEEP there. Although I KNOW MANY kids nap and nap WELL at daycare.

LOL  Can't wait to see what happens.

  • My boys didn't want to sleep anywhere but in our arms at home (still don't) but at daycare they sleep well!  It is amazing but somehow they manage it!

  • You may be really surprised.  I have worked in several daycares and most kids do awesome on the cots even as young as 14 months.  I think they see the other kids doing it and kind of follow along.  Usually they are kept so busy during the morning at daycare that they are very tired come nap time so that also helps.

  •  My DS had a terrible time sleeping at daycare from the time he was 10 months old, he got too nosey, they started putting him on a cot to transition him to the 1 year old room and he slept like a champ.  Now that he is almost 2 and should be used to sleeping on the cot, there are times he won't sleep and times the teacher almost needs to sit on him to keep him on it, but I agree with PP, they love to "copy" what the other kids are doing and will follow along pretty easily.

  • The good thing is at that age, they don't quite understand that they can get up yet so they generally stay put. Especially since it's dark and all of the other kids are laying down.  They will be fine!
  • I had a similar concern when we switched daycares - DS sleeps in a crib at home, and was in a PnP at his previous daycare.  The first day at his new daycare, he slept in a toddler bed - and he actually napped!  I couldn't believe it :)

  • When DD moved to the 1 year old room, they sleep on napmats. They gradually transitioned from the infant room but her first full week in that room is when she started napping there and didn't have an issue. Like PPs said: 1) they only do one nap time starting at 12p so she is tired 2) she is copying everyone else in the room.

I had to pick her up for a doctor appt during the nap time and I wanted to nap in there! It was cool, darkened and had relaxing music playing!

  • your kids will do things at daycare/school that they will never do at home- trust me. I used to be a teacher, worked in daycare- and have 3 kids in daycare now - 2 of which have done things at school that they don't do at home....

Griffin started sleeping in a cot when he was about 11 mo at daycare- i NEVER thought he'd stay - but he did - and slept well... b/c all the other kids did it. At home he would have been up in 2 seconds running around.

Gray won't hold his bottle at home- but does it at school - i didn't even know this until the other day - they said he's done it for a while -thought i knew - go figure!

when i used to have parent/teacher conferences with my kid's parents they were always amazed at the things I told them about their kids - b/c they wouldn't do those thigns at home... it's very common.

  • They will do fine our DC only has one nap time and they get all the kids in the main room to nap. It is dark and teachers are sitting around the room to watch the kids. I have went in several times as the kids are getting up or being put down and they all seem to do as they are told. I love the little cots.
  • I felt exactly the same way as you do. Though my daughter has been in daycare since she was 3 mos, she never napped well there. Overall she just isn't a good sleeper and especially had a hard time with naps at daycare. Her current center transitions each baby right after their first birthday onto a nap mat. I was terrified and dreading this, certain there was NO WAY she would ever nap at all now!  To my total amazement, it has been the best thing ever!!!  She always takes at least a one hour nap now, often 2+ hrs! I have even tried to recreate this at home to no avail.

The power of peer pressure is absolutely amazing!

You will be surprised.  It always amazes me how great my girls have done with the cots and how easy the tranisition was for them.  At my center, the teachers are right there when the kids are first using the cots - they rub backs or whatever and the kids do what all the other kids are doing.
