2nd Trimester

Seeing a Perinatologist.... come on in!!!

Ok so I just got done at my regular doc appt and I am not as excited as I was when I went in. About two weeks ago I had an u/s due to bleeding and was told that they would let me know if anything was wrong (mind you this is the on call doc). So a few days went by no word from the doc, bleeding stopped and I felt fine. I thought no news was good news and we would talk about it at my next appt (today). Well I was wrong the on call doc never sent the report to my doc and when he called for it he was not happy with the results. He is worried about how and where I am carrying as well as my placenta, so he is sending me to a perinatologist but not for another 3 weeks!!!!! He said we will be able to see more then and know what we are dealing with. I am trying to stay calm but the definition of a perinatologist is: An obstetrical subspecialist concerned with the care of the mother and fetus at higher-than-normal risk for complications. So I am having a hard time not freaking out.

If any of you have gone through this or are seeing a perinatiologist please let me know what it is like or what they are having you do. I was told to take it easy but nothing about staying off my feet. Oh and should I get a second opinion about waiting the three weeks or does that sound right?

  • I'm seeing a peri. That in and of itself is nothing to freak about; if anything, I would be happy my doc is being proactive. They're probably waiting to see if your placenta moves up on it's own; thus the three-week wait. That's also normal, and a low-lying placenta does not necessarily mean your pregnancy's in any kind of jeopardy.

Please relax and take your doctor's advice to take it easy until you see the peri. GL.

  • I saw one with DD because I had a subchorionic hemorrhage that then formed a hematoma (basically a pocket of blood between the uterine wall and the placenta.  It really wasn't any big deal.  They just have a much better sonogram machine so what they can see and the details are much better than the typical drs office.  The tech did my initial scan, left to show the perniatologist and then he came in and performed the scan himself because he wanted a different view.  He basically confirmed what my OB thought was going on and sent the details pictures to her.  I felt reassured after seeing him because we knew what exactly we were dealing with and how to proceed.  I think it took about 4 wks to get an aapt with him.

  • Well I would think that since he is not having you go for another 3 weeks it is just a precautionary and not anything to get to worked up about.

I started seeing a peri and was there with in 3 days of seeing my OB.  I was going once a week but as of this week it is now 2X a week.

ETA:  I am not being seen by a peri for the same thing as you.

I am also seeing a peri for high blood pressure. I know its hard not to worry...I worry about every little thing and waiting is the hardest. I think the above advice is great, I couldn't have said it any better.

  • Thank you ladies this has really put my mind at ease. I will try not to worry and just rest till I go in for my appt.

  • I see one and solely a Peri because I had a loss with my first pregnancy at 19 weeks and am now on blood thinners and high doses as folic acid.  The appointments go just like a regular OB visit.  Really nothing exciting.  Probably the biggest difference is I am seen more frequently and get more ultrasounds.  But I am having a pretty uneventfull pregnancy so far at 17 weeks.  I hope it stays that way!
