Pregnant after a Loss

My cough just won't go away!

Am I paranoid?  I have a cough that gets slightly better and then worse every few days.  It's been going on for 4 weeks.  It's really freaking me out.  I have brought this up to my ob.  I feel pretty worried that it can't be good for me or lo to be coughing so long.  I called again today.  So now I am going to be put on amoxicillin - I am a little nervous but feel like it's the right thing to do.  I feel like I am scared no matter what way it goes.  I am hoping this is just me being worried because I don't want anything to hurt my baby.  Please tell me I am just a worry wort and that I am making good choices for me and my baby.

  • you're sure it's not allergies? I cough terribly during allergy season.

I'm sure that there's no way your doctor would put you on a medicine if it was bad for the baby. It's better to have a healthy mama! like for me, I took allergy meds for a month b/c I was miserable. I couldn't open my eyes or anything. It's better for me to be functional than to forgo medicine b/c "it might maybe hurt the baby maybe".

  • amox is safe in pg, but why would your dr put you on it without testing you for an infection first.  there could be a lot of reasons for the coughing.  like shell said it could be allergies or a number of other things.  when our moms have a cough with congestion we recommend Marshmallow Root tea, Emergen-C (one or two packets a day) and walgreens sells something called oscillococcinum (which is used to treat flu-like symptoms).  there are tons of other things that you can use to treat a cough.

do what feels right to you.  if you have questions ask your dr otherwise take the amox.  either way hope you feel better soon.

  • Thank you guys so much.  I should say we have tried other remedies and the cough just doesn't go away.  I guess this is the logical next step especially since it's been such a long time.  I actually just looked at my records and it's been over 8 weeks.  I get nervous to do anything right now.  I really appreciate the support.

I've had a cough too...although it has gotten better lately.  I've been taking Robitussin before going to bed and it helps a lot.  It's just extra mucus from allergies.  I hope yours goes away soon.

  • I have a cough too that won't go away too.  My OB said that coughs linger w/ pregnant women due to post-nasal drip.  I've been using a neti pot which gives temporary relief, but I'm not sure it's really helping long-term.  And cough drops.

I hope the amox works for you.  Get well!
