Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What do you consider baby's first words?

So my LO has started saying da da da da da but she doesn't repeat it when you ask her to or know who da da is.  So is this her first word?  What did you consider your baby's first word?  TIA!

Re: What do you consider baby's first words?

  • I would say it's their first word when it is said with purpose or understanding.

DD will say "bye bye" when we wave to her so I count that.

She will also say "da da" when DH gets home from work, and "baah" when we are filling up the tub.

She's getting pretty good at trying to repeat other sounds, but there are only a couple that I can tell she understands.

  • My LO has been doing this the last couple of weeks as well but no I don't consider that his first word because it doesn't have any meaning for him when he says it. His first word will be whatever he can actually identify the sounds with.
  • i think my LO's first word is dog, but it sounds more like "dah." he looks at our dog and says that. he never says "dah" in any other context so that's why i count it.

he still babbles dadadada and mamama, but i think he knows that "dada" and "mama" are DH and I b/c he will look at the correct parent and say the correct word.

  • Nope, sorry, but I don't consider it to be a word unless they say it repeatedly and understand what they're saying.

I thought DS said "milk" the other day as his first word, but he hasn't said it again since that day so I think it was just a coincidence.

  • 10 months. Sam lifted his arms and said Up.

He's done it a few times since.

Both now say "NeeNay" and clap if I give them a banana. I'm going to count that too.

    Yes

DD says "kee-tay" (kitty) when she sees the cat (or the dogs- but she knows it's an animal) and dada when she sees DH.
