Clicky Poll: CIO for 8 month and older LO - success????

We've been dealing with frequent wakings for 3 weeks; LO had a cold, and was checked for ear infection at Pedi office today.  She didn't have an ear infection, but we'll be raising the head of the mattress & putting humidifier in room in case she's still a bit congested.  Pedi recommended sleep training (CIO); she has a 2yo dd and did it at 5 months for her kid.  We really need to get our LO to go to sleep in the crib by herself and I am doing research to make a decision and share my thoughts with DH since we need to be on the same page. We've been putting her in crib after nursing/rocking/swaying and totally asleep, but can't get her down anymore. I was against CIO, but I'm realizing that things have to change soon; we're all losing sleep and LO is pulling herself up on the crib side so we have to drop the mattress and have the side up before she goes to sleep (the clicks that lock it wake her up). Sad

This poll is for how many nights it took to get your LO to go to sleep on their own, regardless of how long each night took.

Thanks for your input. Smile I want to see how it worked for your LOs before I just jump into it.

  • We've tried CIO for Ben several times since he turned 7 months.  Never works.  He just makes himself so upset that he won't go back to sleep because he's afraid I'll put him down again.  Then he's up ALL night.

    Plus he wakes up Eli!

  • My Opinion, it really depends on the baby, we lucked out. Took us two days, but he still sometimes wakes up once a night.

  • We did not get DS to CIO, but I started putting him to bed awake and letting him try to get to sleep. The first few nights, I would put him to bed and when he started crying I would go in and cuddle him a bit then put him back in bed. Then after a few nights of that, I would only go in and pat his back if he cried. Then the time he would play and chat before starting to cry started getting longer and longer. Eventually he just fell asleep without my going in to pat his back.  As a note: some nights he would still start crying right away and I would go in and nurse him and he'd fall asleep like that, but those got less frequent too.  Now most nights he can get himself to sleep. He only wakes up once a night usually now too, and I go in to nurse him when he cries because he's hungry (he nurses for 10-15 minutes with a fair amount of enthusiasm, so i dont think he's just wanting the comfort alone). If he just makes little fussy sounds I let him get himself back to sleep.

  • We tried with DD ..... we'd lay her down and if she fussed/cried we'd wait a few min before going in to check on her ... we've had to do it up to 5 times some nights ... she eventually got the hint that she had to stay in her bed and NOT come out to play. Then fell asleep.

but sadly we've had to deal with her getting up 3-6 times a night for the past few weeks Crying

  • Well..it took us four days.

But we did CIO for him to actually fall asleep in his crib, not to STTN.

He was still waking once or twice a night.

He started STTN some nights recently though.
