Nora as nn or full name?

Dh loves Nora.  I would like it as a nn for Eleanor (which I love), but not sure about it on its own.  I tend to like longer formal names with a shorter nickname.  Curious what others think.

Last name is two syllables.  Big sister is Gillian.

 Thanks!

Re: Nora as nn or full name?

  • I think of Ellie for Eleanor.. not Norah.. unless this was something you started from a young age, I bet she would end up going by Ellie for short.

I like Norah as its own name though, I think its very pretty, simple and girly.

I like Nora on it's own.  I would honestly never think of "Nora" as a nn for Eleanor.  Eleanor is also cute though!  Like pp said I'd think more Ellie/Ella for a nn though
  • Nora can definitely stand on it's own.

  • I think Nora can be a NN for Eleanor.

I think it stands fine on it's own (love it actually. Like Eleanor too.), but if you prefer it as a NN, that seems like a nice compromise between you and your H. ? Either way, she goes by Nora, right? Unless he just despises Eleanor, I don't see a problem.

  • I love it on its own, Eleanor sounds like such an old lady's name to me.

  • A friend just named her daughter Nora, and I love it.

  • I like Norah (prefer the spelling with an 'h') as a name on it's own. Like a pp said, I think of Elle or Ellie as a nn for Eleanor.

  • One of my cousins is Eleanora, and she goes by Nora.

  • I could go either way. Nora's spelling seems more nickname to me (just my opinion), and Norah seems more like a full name version. I love the name Eleanor.

  • Nora or Norah on its own is perfect, but it's also a nn for Honor.

I know several Noras. Their full names are ALL Eleanor. The only Eleanor I know who goes by Ellie is the sister on CHUCK, and she's fictional.

Nora also works as a full name, though.

  • I'm not sure I get the whole "the nickname will default to this" line of thinking. Your kid will grow up with whatever name you give him/her, and they either love it, hate it or compromise. For instance, my cousin's name, Melissa. She went by missy as a toddler, her full name through middle school and then Junior Hight brought Mel...and that's how she prefers to be called. My name is Angel, but my nickname is Fred because of a not-so-funny childhood incident. The name stuck and even though they aren't related at all. Sure I could go by Ange if my mom had repeated it or enforced it, but she didn't, so my name is Angel. Your kid(s) name is whatever you decide to raise him/her with...after that it's out of your hands.

  • My hubby and I were having the exact same discussion. I do think Nora can definitely stand alone.

We have decided instead to use Elinor as a middle name instead of a first, but I think whichever way you decide to go has its pros and cons.

FWIW, we were leaning towards Elinor with Nora as a nn.

I think Nora works well as a stand alone name but I really love Eleanor with Nora as the nickname (we named our DD Eleanor and call her Nora....it suits her perfectly)

  • Love Eleanor.  Love Nora.  And I like Nora as a NN for Eleanor, even though I have never heard it before(as a NN for Eleanor I mean).
  • I like it as a nn for Eleanor. I like more formal given names with more cutesy nn too.

Agreed.  It is a name on its own.

  • Nora/h is its own name, unless you make up Eleanorah just so you can have the nn.
