DH accepted a job offer from UPenn today. We will probably be moving to the Lower Merion/Radnor/Wayne or perhaps Center City general area sometime late summer. I will have delivered LO by then of course, but for some reason it nagged me all night that I need to find a new OB and will need a Pediatrician too.
Any Suggestions?
Also, I would love any info/suggestions you have about neighborhoods to live. We probably won't be flying out to look for houses until June.
Re: XP: Moving to Philly, OB/Pediatrician/Newborhood recommendations?
OB- Dr. Phillip Hirshman - in King of Prussia- he delivers at Bryn Mawr (great hospital with a NICU
i have recommended him to several bumpies- and everyone has thanked me.
i really can't recommend my pedi- i am looking for a new one now as well.
Good luck with the move.
I have some center city recommendations... I go to Penn Care for Women for my OB/GYN. I see Dr. Alam but she's moving to Virginia in a few months. I know all of the doctors at that practice are supposed to be very good, though (they're all women).
For a pediatrician, I can recommend Center City Pediatrics (it's at 17th and South Streets). A bunch of moms in my neighborhood go there and love it.
If you end up living in the suburbs, you may want a pediatrician there vs. in the city though.
For Ped - I have heard wonderful things about Kids First - Havertown. I am using Kids First - Paoli b/c it is closer to me. I work with two people who both use the Havertown location and absolutely love it.
For a ped I am going to use Kids First in Roxborough. I had a consultation with them last week and was very impressed.
For an OB I use Dr. Robert Dein who is with Main Line Women's Health. I go to the Rosemont office, but I believe they also have offices in Plymouth Meeting and Paoli. They deliver at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He is apparently one of the best OB's on the Main Line and on their website it states that he does not except new patients. My friend was having an issue and her Gyno was retiring, so I told her to call anyway and see what they said and they let her in to see him, but she had to wait about a month for an appt. I like them even more because they have office hours to 10pm on Tuesdays, so it is convenient for so many reasons.
Places to live...I grew up in Ardmore, but the Delaware County side near Merion Golf Course...there are some nice homes for sale in that area. Haverford is a great school district and that is why my Mom picked that location when she had all six of us kids. Delaware County is very convenient to the city, but can be pretty pricey...we are looking to move to the Rose Tree Park area of Media next year. Center City is great for young couples. I have a house in the Art Museum area (great community with most of the homes refurbished and many younger couples/families moving into that area). The houses tend to be $450k and up in that area. They have a sense of community there (by Eastern State Pennitentary) and have different activities going on in the summer and a farmers market I believe once a week. We probably won't be done the renovations and ready to sell till the end of the summer.
Good luck with your move!
We live in Center City with our LO and we LOVE it (Society Hill). We can walk everywhere, which makes me feel like a normal person and not like a mommy stuck at home all the time. We save money by only having one car, and DD was in a car seat on the way home from the hospital and then not again until she was over a month old. I can put the sleeping baby in the wrap, and we can go out for a coffee or a beer or even just for a quick grocery trip. There are little parks all over the place. Plus it would make your DH's commute so much easier-- Philly traffic is terrible, but jumping on the subway or regional rail line is super easy, since UPenn is a major stop from nearly every direction.
Not sure if you're looking to rent or buy, but we have a 2 bed/ 1 bath for $1100/month, and it's totally comfortable for the 3 of us. You can find really nice places if you can afford more like $12-1500/mo; I have no idea what house prices are like. I can tell you that when I go walking with DD during the day, there are moms & babies with strollers everywhere, all the time.
I also love our pedis-- South Philadelphia Pediatrics, the Queen Village office. Every doctor I've seen makes me feel like we're the only patient they have
My OB is Jefferson's Womens Health Specialties group, they were wonderful to me in the whole prenatal process, and Jefferson in general is very open to a mom's wishes during the labor & delivery process. My only complaint there is that they were super busy most of the time. If your DH works at Penn, I'd expect you could get care through the Penn health system, which I've also heard great things about.
Feel free to PM me if you're seriously looking at Center City; I'm a little biased after spending the past few years there, but I feel like now is the perfect time to be in the city-- with a baby you don't need to worry about school districts, or having a big yard, or any of those suburban-home things
Everything is so exciting when you're one!
I live in Fishtown, which is a great area, and cheap too because it's "up and coming." It's safe, but it just doesn't look as clean as other parts of the city. We rent a 3 bedroom house for $800/month. It is kind of a hipster, artsy area with a lot of young people moving in.
I go to Penncare for Women, which I would highly recommend. They are part of the Penn Health System. The only drawback is that the OB you see for prenatal appointments is not the person who delivers you. You will see a random "laborist" on call when you arrive at the hospital. But I'm sure at that point, it won't really matter who catches the baby! I don't have any pediatricians to recommend, cuz this will be my first baby. We're starting to look into that now!
I love my OB, Dr. Scott Bailey. He's in Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood. I'm newly pregnant so I don't have a Ped for you.
As far as areas, there are so many and they all have their pros and cons. I'm a realtor so if you have any questions, reach out to me at juststartpacking@kw.com.
Good luck!
