Breastfeeding

need to supplement with formula - help!

I am breastfeeding and pumping and I need a formula to supplement.  My doctor told me to use Similac advance but I am not sure if it is working well for my daughter. It's hard because she is so "regular" with the breast milk.  Her bowl movements are regular and her sleep patterns are very regular.  I feel like everytime I throw the formula into the mix, she changes.  Any advice on which formula works well with breast fed babies.  I am sure it just depends on the baby but I am a new mom and I am not sure what to do.  We are going to see the doc today.  Thanks!

Re: need to supplement with formula - help!

  • First, why are you supplementing/pumping? Did DD lose more than 10% of her birth weight? Is it a jaundice issue?

I have no formula advice but would like to know why you're being told to supplement so early.

  • Loading the player...
  • she is not latching well..that's really it.
  • Sorry to hear that - have you seen an LC to help with that? Have you tried a nipple shield? How much are you pumping per session right now and how much formula are you giving at each feed?

I'm hoping we can give you some advice to help you bf and ditch supplementing super fast since early supplementing frequently leads to lower milk supply and hence, more moms quitting bfing all together.

  • Formula digests slower than breastmilk...that is the reason her schedule is off when you give her formula. All of the formulas digest slower so I am not sure that switching formulas will make a difference. With my first child I went through the same thing you are going through...we never did end up BFing...not because of supply issues but due to her never latching well. We used enfamil lactofree lipil, which apparently they do not make anymore. We switched from regular enfamil due to huge issues with spit-up. I would say if she is not gassy or fussy with one formula don't switch due to a schedule issue.

I hope you are successful in learning to BF with her. As long as you pump every time you feed her (formula or breastmilk) your supply should respond...at least most of the exclusive pumpers will tell you that.

  • Definitely go see a LC.
  • Our pedi recommended enfamil lipil premuium as being the most like breastmilk. her diapers and sleep will be a little different either way, like the OP said. good luck!!
