Cancelled Prepared Childbirth Class, no reschedule!!!

My last few posts have been vents.  I promise, I am not grumpy.  :)  Haha.  I kind of use this as my therapy, so once it's on here, I try to forget about it.  Plus, it's nice to hear everyone's feedback, so I know I am not nuts.  And I don't want to nag my husband about some of this stuff.  Thanks for listening, ladies!!!

We signed up for a "Prepared Childbirth" class about a month ago, which was supposed to take place at our hospital last Saturday.  I work nights, so I had to leave almost 2.5 hours early, with the plan on staying up for an 8 hours class.  We drove about 70 minutes to get there and when we do, there is a nice man standing at the door, who tells us that the class has been cancelled.  We didn't receive a call or anything.  He said the class would be rescheduled during another weekend in May and we would be getting a call sometime today (Monday).

Well, I got the call, and they aren't rescheduling and they don't offer another one until AFTER my due date.  I can't find any information on another class in our area or the vicinity before our due date.  I really liked the fact of going to our hospital.  She did offer us a tour, so we will get that, but I am bummed.  I was looking forward to it a lot.

I am just kind of irked that I took the time off, drove down there and they cancel, without a call.  And now they won't reschedule for another weekend in May or June.  They said there was 30 couples in that class, so I know we aren't the only ones in this position.

My husband says "Well, there's probably nothing that would have prepared us for childbirth anyways."  Which made me laugh!  :)

  • That sucks!!! If it makes you feel any better, I thought the best part of our childbirth class was the hospital tour. So if you're getting that, you're probably getting the best part!

  • Yes, it sucks - but personally the class we took before #1 was a waste of time.  You can learn what we learned by watching discovery health, tlc, etc.  Just dvr the baby shows (baby story, bringing home baby, etc).
  • Wow!  I wouldn't have been a happy camper either!  I hope you find something before your LO gets here.  We learned so much from our birthing classes!
  • Booo.  That does suck. You'd think they'd call you or something?  I hope you're able to find another class before your due date.

This is what I'm kind of expecting this Saturday for our 8 hour class.  I'm not uneducated so while I think it will be good for DH, I kind of can't help but think it's going to be a waste of time in a sense for me.  We wanted to do the one day class and just get it out of the way rather than 6 nights over the course of 6 weeks.  Ours is not even at the hospital itself; it's in one of the hospital system's outer buildings a couple of blocks away and nothing in the paperwork says that we are doing a tour.    Oh well.  If we complete the course, we get money back from our insurance company for completing the well baby course so that's an incentive, too.

  • Honestly, I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know from reading books.  One really good one I read was the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy.  And DH apparently didn't pay attention or learn anything either because last night he actually asked me "how do you know when you're going into labor?"  Talk about a waste of time!  :)  Oh well.  We'll survive!  But it does suck that you had to go through all that trouble for nothing.

  • The same thing happened to me this weekend!!!

fortunately, I was able to find a place in the community that offered a class and had a slot, but ended up spending $161 that I wasn't planning to spend. Tongue Tied

it was weird cuz they claimed I was the only one that signed up for the may class. I signed up in February cuz the April class was already full... there's NO way that the april class could have been full in February but the next class have no one else signed up? strange....

  • that's pretty inconsiderate of them not to call.

We live 1.5 hours from our hospital/birthing center, so we opted to take a one day private class with a doula instead of driving down for 2 weekends for the regular class. maybe you could take a private class? I did find the class helpful, even though I've read a ton.

  • Wow what a PITA!  Sorry that happened!

I'm not doing a childbirth class (they were all booked up by the time I looked a month ago!),  but I am getting a perinatal tour and a breastfeeding class.   I wouldn't worry too much about it! Your husband is probably right, and as one of the PP's said,  the best part is probably just the tour and knowing where you're supposed to go, etc.
